| Change Hard Drive on Toshiba 2500CDS? Hi. I am getting a used Toshiba Satellite 2500CDS. http://209.167.114.38/ISG/pastproduc...0cds_spec.html Can I just take a hard drive from an old computer and put it in the Toshiba? Someone told me that all Toshiba parts were proprietary and would not fit into the computers of other brands. Thanks, Mitch |

| Re: Change Hard Drive on Toshiba 2500CDS? I usually work on Dells but my guess is that your Toshiba will take any laptop drive. Now when changing a drive there maybe an adapter on the end that must be used with the new drive. The connector and drive cage might be proprietary, but the drive is not. | Re: Change Hard Drive on Toshiba 2500CDS? No, the hard drives are not proprietary and yes, you can take just about any 2.5" IDE hard drive and use it in just about any laptop, Toshiba or otherwise (except for recent models that use SATA instead of IDE hard drives). Of course, this is a generalization to which there could be a few, but very few, exceptions. However, please note: 1. You can't generally use the operating system installed on one laptop on another laptop of a different model. You can use the hard drive, but you should expect to have to do a complete reinstall of Windows (and perhaps even a reformat/repartition). 2. What you are calling "the hard drive" may in fact be the hard drive installed into a hard drive caddy (or "carrier"). Most laptops use caddys. Caddy's are normally both proprietary and model specific (ALL caddys, not just Toshiba). You may need to remove the hard drive from whatever caddy, if any, it is currently in, and install it into the caddy for the 2500CDS (and if you didn't get the caddy with the laptop, you may have to obtain one .... sometimes incredibly difficult). Other common limits are 32GB, 128gb and 137GB. Before putting in a modern hard drive, i would consider a bios upgrade. If available. If you're just pulling one from a same generation machine, there's not likely to be a problem http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t..._sc_modSel.jsp http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.c...jsp?service=EU |
