Sony Laptop PCG-4B1L Laptop HD corrupt-How to retrieve data

Hello All;
I have been working all morning on extracting the data from my
supervisor's Sony Laptop Hard Drive that became corrupt a few weeks
ago. When she boots up, the system automatically goes into some sort
of BIOS System Recovery application. My knowledge of computer
troubleshooting is high and if it were a full size PC, I'm sure I
wouldn't have a problem though I havn't worked on any laptops yet.
Here are the few questions I have ...

We are at the point where we removed the hard drive. I was all ready
to connect the HD to a PC but the connector is way too small for a
standard 2.5 to 3.5" Hard Drive adapter cable and the sex of the
end that connects to my adapter is also wrong (It's is female and it
should be male) Is this hard drive that Sony used a special hard drive
rather than the standard 2.5" HD ? Is there any way to connect
this to a PC ? Is there any adapter made ? Anyone have any suggestions
about how to get corrupt data off this drive ? Thanks for any advice
you can provide.
Tim

If everything is formatted in order and the data is INDEED extractable
(there's a chance it isn't especially with these laptop disks)...

Go to your nearest computer store and purchase a portable USB enclosure
for the drive (they come in PATA and SATA versions) for $15-$25. Mount
up the drive then plug it into another system. It's the easiest way to
do this and you'll have the enclosure for future use.

Laptop drives come in two heights. Older systems use 12.5mm drives while
newer ones use 9.5mm drives. Make sure your enclosure is the right
height for the drive.

The drive might have an adapter specifically for mounting in that
laptop. Look at the connector carefully to see if it is removable.
