Plastic covering the fan grill on notebook

Hi there,

My notebook (an Acer Travelmate 2310) has been overheating lately.
Looking at the plastic grille on the underside where the fan is, I
noticed that, just underneath the grille, there is a thin sheet of
transparent plastic covering most of the space. Is that serving a
purpose, or is it not supposed to be there? It seems like it would be
obstructing most of the airflow . . . but maybe it keeps dust out or
something?

Thanks,
Jamie.

I could open it, but I don't know how I could tell if the piece of
plastic is meant to be there or not...

Jamie.
