Docking station question for Dell Lat. D600

At the office i have a Dell latitude D600 laptop, and when i connect
the laptop onto the docking station and then try to power the system
on, all the lights on the laptop light up and then turn off within
seconds. What i'm asking is, is this normal? Because it seems the only
way to use the system with the dock station is to turn the system on
before docking it. Any advice on this? I've also tried a different dock
station, but it does the same thing.
