| Can I swap hard drives to a similar laptop? I had a Fujitsu Lifebook 6210 (1.3M processor). It fried on me yesterday. I would like to buy a similar model used lifebook on ebay and just swap in my 100GB hard drive from my old Lifebook. My goal is to get back up and running without re-installing windows and my applications. Would something like this work? Or does Windows or other applications often tie installation to specific hardware serial#s. Thanks |

If it's XP, it's likely to object to the different hardware. The same would apply if you were to re-install on the new hardware - 'cos you'll have to go online to MS to activate it, and MS's system will recognise that this copy of XP has already been activated on different hardware. You'll have to contact MS and explain that you are transferring it because the old hardware died. They should then sort it out for you. -- Cheers, Roger ______ Email address maintained for newsgroup use only, and not regularly monitored.. Messages sent to it may not be read for several weeks. In my experience that has a very high probability of working fine if the machines are indeed the same model number version and specification. There appear to be two flavours of WinXP, the OEM versions tied just to a manufacturer's BIOS signature and other OEM and retail versions which need to be activated by Microsoft Product Key number and then are broadly tied to whatever hardware is discovered upon activation with just incremental changes in hardware over time permitted. If yours is the first kind then there will never be a problem. But even if your is the second kind, the two machines will appear so similar to the software (including disk Volume Serial Number and size, memory size etc.) that the only difference may be the network adapter MACs and that change alone would not cause a problem. | Re: Can I swap hard drives to a similar laptop? yes it can be done with a repair install if the need arises. the second machine may have something a little different. <techman41973******.com> wrote in message news:1167504268.831793.285080@i12g2000cwa.googlegr oups.com... >I had a Fujitsu Lifebook 6210 (1.3M processor). The changes will be the MAC address (counts as 3 changes) and the change in processor serial number. The presence of a PCMCIA port will not prevent them from counting (it only prevents removal from counting). |

| Re: Can I swap hard drives to a similar laptop? Depends on how similar. You may need a repair install, but if the laptop is identical or nearly so it might work. techman41973******.com wrote: > I had a Fujitsu Lifebook 6210 (1.3M processor).
