xp won't recognize maxtor 80 gig

I have an HP Pavilion with XP, it will not recognize my Maxtor 80 gig
external drive. All other computers I tried work with this device no
problem.
How can I fix this??
Thanks,
Ramey

Does the drive show up in the BIOS? Does it show up in "Computer
Management" (NOT "My Computer")?

I don't believe that "external disk drives" show up in the bios.

How are you connecting this external drive?

That external drive should have a installation disk with it. Have you
tried inserting the disk and let the HP update it's drivers. That's
what I had to do on 1 of my computers with an external drive I switch
when traveling. If you don't have the disk, I'd go to Maxtor's website
and down load the driver from there.

I'm not the one with the external disk that doesn't work.

My Xp/pro recognizes MAXTOR on the 4 port hub okay. Thats where
I update my images from time to time with latest version of Ghost..
Might I also suggest installing Dantz Retrospect form the
box that came from the MAXTPR box.

I have come across several USB/Firewire enclosures that do not correctly
support older drives that use some of the older interface modes. An 80 gig
drive is likely to be old enough not to use one of the UDMA modes (probably
one of the old PIO modes). The practical upshot is that if the driver in
the computer does not quite work with the slightly broken interface
correctly, then it won't work. The fact that the drive works in another
machine supports this.
