| Re: buying a warranty.. toshiba and other companies There are no 3rd party's that will unless there bought new. With Toshiba you have 30days from new to buy one. The reason is, You buy one then report it damaged and get it fixed. jameshanley39******.co.uk wrote: > if I buy a laptop from a friend, and it works, but the laptop is not in > warranty. | Re: buying a warranty.. toshiba and other companies Generally not, although there may be some exceptions. Toshiba, in particular, will only sell a warranty within 30 days of the purchase of a new computer from an authorized Toshiba dealer. jameshanley39******.co.uk wrote: > if I buy a laptop from a friend, and it works, but the laptop is not in > warranty. | Re: buying a warranty.. toshiba and other companies If you buy it from some online retailers they offer warranties you can purchase from a third party warranty company called, IIRC, Square Trade. Unfortunately this company doesn't offer warranties in all places. When I bought my refurbished Dell from a retailer on EBay, I couldn't buy the warranty they offered because of my location. The stated reason is "regulatory issues." They offer warranties if you're located in 48 of the 50 states. I'm not sure about foreign countries. The warranty they offered on my Dell was for 3 years, parts and labor for something like $35-40. |

| Re: buying a warranty.. toshiba and other companies Some state legislatures, in their infinite wisdom, have classified extended warranties as "insurance" and made them subject to ALL of that state's insurance laws, including that they can only be sold by licensed insurance agents (oh yes, there's a lot of similarity between a double indemnity modified whole-life life insurance policy and a 3-year extended warranty on a laptop computer .......). To which most of the manufacturers have responded by simply refusing to offer extended warranties in those jurisdictions. | Re: buying a warranty.. toshiba and other companies Thanks for the information, I didn't know that. I emailed the company that sold the warranty offered when I bought my laptop and they just emailed me back a form response with zero real answer to the question. I wish I'd known that before or they'd just told me it was out of their hands and it was the legislature that had made it impossible for them to sell in VA. You are right, it's incredibly stupid to classify extended warranties as insurance. But, if certain states, such as VA, have classifed extended warranties as "insurance" how do stores like Best Buy sell their extended store warranties, aka protection plans? I've got the product protection plan for my XBox 360, my digital camera and my HDTV from Best Buy, which of course I paid good money for. I'd be mad as hell if I found out the warranty I purchased (in a brick and mortar store, not from their web site) isn't valid for the terms it says it is. Do you know what the legal difference is there?
