basic question

Can anyone tell me what an "inverter" in a laptop does?
A failed screen requires the replacement of this part.
Thank you very much

It is essentially a power supply - it takes in a low DC voltage
(usually 12V) and outputs a high-voltage, low-current AC supply that
powers the fluorescent tube which illuminates the LCD.
