Hello,

Please please help me with this...

I have a laptop http://shopping.hp.ca/cStoreCA/BaseDetai...

the problem is its Super Multi 8X DVD±R/RW with Double Layer Support
reads and write DVDs but cant read or write CDs. I have tried all my cd
they all work on my friends laptop and not on mine. :)

I have reinstalled all the software, drivers and all, i think its an
hardware problem ... please tell me how i can fix this.

Please please help.

DVD drives uses different lasers for DVD and CD. Sounds like your laser
for CD is burned out. I have DVD one that only reads CDs, want to trade?

You may have a bad drive. Different lasers are used for reading CDs and
DVDs.

Thanks for your mail and information,

Can the problem you pointed out is easy to cure OR it can burn a hole
in my pocket.

Reading CDs will be backward compatiblilty ... I will prefer to have
DVD R/W insted of CD R/W :) ...

Close. One laser is used for reading all DVDs, premastered CDs and CD-RWs.
The second laser is only required for CD-Rs which do not reflect the orange
laser.

This is why early DVD video players would play all disks except CD-Rs.

Weird, I have one Toshiba 2595XDVD, that will read any CD I throw in
there. But it won't read any DVD anymore. It used too. That drive that
is in there originally can only read CD/DVD and not burn anything. I
have another 2595XDVD that still can read any CD/DVD. These are from '99
era.

The orange/red (DVD) laser has failed. When it can't read the disk with
this laser, it will try the infra-red laser (it assumes the disk is a CD-R).
If this succeeds (which it will for any CD type), it continues to read the
CD that way.

Though possible, the cost of the laser read head assembly plus the necessary
dismantling makes it wholly unecconomical. The cost will far exceed the
cost of a replacement drive.

You're obviously not aware of the loaded-labour-rate cost of a "hardware
professional". Considerably more per-hour than the cost of a new item.
