Weird laptop keyboard problem!!

Helloo. I have a JVC MP-XV841 mini laptop.

It has a weird problem. It has been working fine up until now.

The 8, 9, I, O, K and L keys do not work. I can press them and get
nothing. However, if hold SHIFT and press any of them, their SHIFT
alternative (* ( or CAPS) works fine. Then when I release SHIFT I can
continue to type the lower case letter for a few seconds until it
starts ignoring me again.

The second key does not have to be shift. Pressing the I key will do
nothing, but if I press the U and the I keys together (or any working
key and the I key) then it will print both characters. I can then
delete these characters and type I as normal for a few seconds. The
same applies to the other 'dead' keys. 'Freeing' one key does not
release the others.

I thought it must be software because no hardware problem could
possibly cause this!! Either the keys would work, or they wouldn't
work. But this is not the case here! Therefore I formatted the laptop
and ran the recovery business on it. This did not fix it.

I have tried booting the laptop off linux-live and windows-live CDs to
avoid XP completely, but this still does not help (same problem).

Any thoughts? Anyone!? I'm totally stumped!! And being such a rare
laptop, there are no spares anywhere to be found.

Oh and plugging in a USB keyboard works fine.

Thanks. And help!! Please!!

J

Re: Weird laptop keyboard problem!!

Check that you don't have NumLock on. Those sound like the embedded numbers
keypad.

Re: Weird laptop keyboard problem!!

Nope - not a numlock problem. It doesn't work with numlock on or off.
Also the F6 and F7 keys behave in the same way.

Re: Weird laptop keyboard problem!!

Fixed!!

It was an eyelash in the contact for the keyboard on the motherboard.
Nothing some meths and a brush didn't fix!
