| How can I increase video RAM on an LG notebook? Hello, I've got a LG P1 Express Dual (LG P1-527A) notebook with onboard video. I'd like to allocate more RAM to my video card but I can't find any option within the BIOS or in Windows XP. Does anybody know whether this is possible? Thanks! |

It this specific to LG machines or to notebooks in general? I have a desktop PC that uses shared RAM for graphics and I'm able to allocate up to 128 meg to the graphics card through the BIOS. |

I think the manufacturers went to auto-allocation because the average user had no idea how to optimize video performance. Perhaps someone with detailed knowledge will respond! Q |

Well it only has been 64MB of video RAM this whole time (I owned it 4 months now). I am just guessing it doesn't give it more unless I add more than 512MB of RAM. Maybe 1GB or 2GB gives it the full 128MB of shared memory. -- Bill |

| Re: How can I increase video RAM on an LG notebook? I think your video system will take the whole 128MB (from 512MB) if it needs it. It's really a function of what you are doing with the graphics chip. Those amounts of video memory are not used for bitmaps, they are used for texture maps and things like that. You will only need that kind of memory if you run the types of applications that use a lot of textures and 3D animation. Mostly these are interactive games with lots of 3D graphics, and CAD programs. The stuff that non-gaming "normal" people do (e.g. office applications, mostly) isn't that demanding and won't push the video graphics capability that much. However, Vista's "Aero" interface (or, more correctly, "glass"), will do it. And very unfortunately, at this time Aero/glass is not going to be supported on GMA900, although it is supported on the very similar successor, GMA950. But it never dropped under 64MB or ever used more than 64MB. > And very unfortunately, at > this time Aero/glass is not going to be supported on GMA900, although > it is supported on the very similar successor, GMA950. No problems here. I'll let you guys work out the bugs and I will probably join you Vista folks about the year 2011. They should have some really cool Vista compatible laptops by then. <grin> -- Bill |
