| Circuit City laptop deals. I saw in the Sunday paper today that Circuit City has a free printer, wireless -Grouter $ internet Security 2007 software with purchase of any notebook, excluding HP and Compac. This is after rebates of course. Perhaps as X-mas gets closer, the deals will get better if the retailers aren't having the best season. |

| Re: Circuit City laptop deals. (Best Buy also) Both CC and Best Buy have the Toshiba M115 deal back at $599 (Core Duo, with DVD burner). As you note, at CC you can (at your option) get a free printer, router and security software, but rebates are involved (even with the base computer only). The BB deal is an outright buy with no rebates. One of the other stores (Office Depot, I think) also had a Celeron laptop at $499. So there definitely are more and better deals this week than were available last week (including even just yesterday). Try to get a machine with XP Media Center instead of XP Home, the Vista upgrade option is a lot better, the equivalent of $100 to $200 better. shareyourknowledge********.com wrote: > I saw in the Sunday paper today that Circuit City has a free printer, > wireless -Grouter $ internet Security 2007 software with purchase of > any notebook, excluding HP and Compac. This is after rebates of course. > Perhaps as X-mas gets closer, the deals will get better if the > retailers aren't having the best season. > |

| Re: Circuit City laptop deals. (Best Buy also) It doesn't matter whether or not Vista is a hit, it doesn't matter whether at this time you plan to actually use it (install the upgrade) or not. The laptop will have a life of probably 3 years, after which it will likely be sold as a used laptop. The Vista upgrade is worth $100 to $200 and is FREE (with media center or Pro). It has SUBSTANTIAL value, and it's free, so take it. You may use it immediately, you may not use it immediately but want it "down the road", or you may never use it but it may add $100 to $200 to what you get for the used laptop when you resell it (it may, in fact, be worth more than the hardware). It's Free, and it's got substantial value, and to not take it is just plain dumb. | Re: Circuit City laptop deals. (Best Buy also) This is the deal: If the computer comes with XP Home now .... Upgrade to Vista Basic costs $40 to $60 (set by the OEM) If the computer comes with XP Media Center now .... Upgrade to Vista Premium is free If the computer comes with XP Pro now .... Upgrade to Vista Business is free The value (cost) of: -Vista Basic is about $100 -Vista Premium is about $160 -Vista Business is about $220 The computer OEMs may or may not also charge for shipping, for all versions, at their own discretion. Dell is charging $10 for shipping. Other vendors vary, some are charging $8 to $20 for shipping, some are not charging anything. This is why, if at all possible, when buying a new computer now you should look for one that comes with XP Media Center instead of XP Home (XP Pro will usually add $100 to the cost of the computer, but Media Center is now frequently offered at base price or the same price as XP Home) Gaylord wrote: > > On another note about vista, I thought that all computer makers were giving > free upgrade to vista? Although most people would value a Windwos 98SE machine more than one with Windows ME. It is too early to tell, but the same thing could happen between Windows XP and Vista. And speaking about free, Linux has always been free. But you don't see me getting excited over it. And until my software will run under it, I won't either. ;) And speaking about selling my computers, I don't do that. I give them away to people who can't afford them. As for me being dumb because I don't want Vista even if it is free, well that is a matter of opinion. It is just some of us just doesn't get too excited anymore. ;) -- Bill |

I have the XP media center install DVDs ( I made a backup set and ordered the complete install from HP) and next week ( when HP is taking names) I will order the Vista MC dvd's - for free (shipping??) . Otherwise if the new buyer (your donor) wants Vista, he'd have to buy it at retail. ( BTW could only get ME from upgrade/OEM - not full install at retail). Whether I use Vista or not, I'll have the OPTION - although I'll proably wait until SP1. Other than neat graphics it "didn't do anything for me" either. I've beta-tested it for a year of so and only used it " when I wanted to play". I have both versions of it on this PC currently - for free - and use XP. |

It is just some of us just doesn't get too > excited anymore. ;) > Hi Bill, Personally, I will get excited by a new OS from MS the day it is sleeker, lighter, simpler and more reliable than the previous one. Considering the demands it makes on hardware, I believe it will be several years before a majority of users simply CAN run it efficiently. Among those, some will be deterred by the price and by the registration requirements. Of course, most buyers of new machines will run what they find installed on the machine ... I do not buy the argument that Vista will add value to a second hand machine. If any, it will be marginal. But until we have a realistic alternative to Windows (and I agree with you, Linux is not one for most of us), unfortunately we are stuck with whatever MS does to stimulate its bottom line ... Wonder how many megs of patches there are to upgrade with as soon as the install is done. Probably more than an friends 4 gig hard drive that was plenty big enough for Win 2000 and data. It is not down-compatible, and it requires super-high speed hardware with monster video card to run all features. When U strip it off from all water-flows U get just a modified Win.XP. By the way... all the graphical features was copied from Linux and MacOS. So there is nothing to be excited about in this new M$ product. GA. |
