| how to transfer contents on laptop to desktop Hello,. My laptop has gone crazy once again. Now it does not recognize the network nor does it connect to the internet when connected directly to the cable modem. So I was wondering if there was anyway I could transfer the contents of my hard drive to another PC hard drive. It would not be a problem, but for some reason my cd burner does not work anymore. I know it all needs upgrading or replacing, but money is a serious object right about now. So what I would like to do is transfer to another hard drive in the desktop PC all of the information and data I would really like to not lose. This happened before I could store the latest to the PC via the network sharing I had set up. thanks in advance for any suggestions or help sandy |

| Re: how to transfer contents on laptop to desktop There are many ways to do this, if the laptop is still reasonably functional you could use a USB flash drive, or a USB hard drive, or you could remove the hard drive and connect it to a USB cable or case and then plug it into another computer. smurfettegreen1******.com wrote: > Hello,. > My laptop has gone crazy once again. True, it does require removing the hard drive from the problem PC to transfer the data to another but it does take the defective PC out of the equation. Especially nice if the original PC is having hardware or power supply problems but had not burned out the drive yet. If you do decide to get one of these adaptors somewhere, read the fine print. Some of the vendors are not including the power adaptor stuff needed to power the 3.5 or SATA drives unless you pay extra shipping charges. Here is a long link to one such adaptor cable for example presently on eBay that does include everything, including a mini-CD with drivers for those pesky systems that need them: http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-to-IDE-C...em160061749013 |

Can't tell if your cd READER is working? Floppy? USB? serial port? parallel port? Drive format? Operating system? And What tools you have available, hardware, software, other systems that you're willing to take apart to hook up a bare drive etc... Given all the failures you're having, have you considered the possibility of a virus? I'd at least to a virus scan on anything you get off it. Laplink or any of it's clones will copy files over the serial or parallel ports. It will even install itself over a serial port if you have no other working input. They make usb transfer cables with a wart in the middle. Mine takes windows running on both ends to install and work. My fallback is a program called lptdos. It boots from a DOS floppy and gives you full access to a fat formatted drive. Never tried it with ntfs or linux formatted drives. You need the free totalcommander running on a windows machine on the other end. Works like laplink. Takes forever, but that's what nights are for. If you can boot from a CD, there are drive imaging programs that can copy your files to a usb hard drive. I'm told newer versions of ghost can do this. I use the Acronis V7 that they were giving away a while back. It claims to understand ntfs and various linux formats. Imaging the drive also insures that you can get the OS back after you fix whatever is ailing the machine. IF you just copy the files and you don't have the restore disks, you may be outa luck getting the OS reinstalled without jumping some serious hoops. Or you can pull the drive and put it into a desktop (that can read the format) to read it. Easier on some laptops than others. This whole file access/recover/tools fiasco is why I put FAT32 with two partitions on everything I can so I can easily (frequently) image one to the other. mike |

(Snip) > So what I would like to do is transfer to another hard drive in the > desktop PC all of the information and data I would really like to not > lose. > sandy *** Does the unit have a USB connector? What about a serial or parallel port connector? If so, use a file transfer utility that works via one of those ports. If it's just data and not programs or large media files, you could use a compression program to reduce them in size. (They will readily compress.) Then copy them to floppy discs, recopy them to another hard drive, test the recopies, then erase the floppy discs and copy some more files. It's slow, but it will work. | Re: how to transfer contents on laptop to desktop Without a spare drive and copying locally (as others suggested), I find this works best if you have lots of stuff to keep track of and the disk space: Create a MOVE folder on the laptop and in there create the same folders as "Current PC" , so if you have " My Stuff" folder now, create one in the move folder. Or C:\ "Program Files\Money 2004\data" etc and then copy (or 'move' if not needed there any longer) all of the current data into that "move folder". THEN hookup a crossover cable ( $8 at CompUSA) and copy/move that one folder to the other PC's desktop. Disconnect cable. The tedious part is done. On the new pc you'll have a new MOVE folder on the desktop. Open it and drag each folder to where it belongs , so if you had a "C:\ My Stuff" folder, drag the "My Stuff" folder to "C:\ " . You're done when the MOVE folder on the destination PC is empty and "everything's where it was" on your old PC without having to keep track in your head/on paper. If you've never used a crossover cable to transfer data, there's lots of info via google.
