Need display driver for Sony VAIO PCG-XG29

I tried to post a message here yesterday but the Google search can't
find it this morning so I'm trying again. So my apologies if this
should somehow turn out to be a duplicate post.

I inherited my niece's old Sony VAIO PCG-XG29. It was running Windows
XP, but since I only have a CD for Win2K, I reformatted the VAIO hard
drive and installed Win2K.

Now I'm stuck with a 16 color VGA display.

I've been hunting around on the web for a suitable display driver but
haven't had any luck.

I'd be grateful for some help.

Re: Need display driver for Sony VAIO PCG-XG29

It's possible that a display driver for Windows 2000 doesn't exist for a
machine that came from the factory with XP.

Is there some sort of sticker saying NVIDIA or ATI on the bottom right under
the keyboard?

I think you need to install the Intel chipset drivers, since it appears
from Sony's site that this has embedded 'everything'.

This is a pretty old laptop.

In the lower right corner of the keyboard is a sticker that says:

"Designed for Microsoft Windows 98"

That sounds promising.

Only I didn't really understand what you wrote. I'm a little slow on
the uptake.

I'd be grateful if you (or someone reading this) could tell me where I
could find the "Intel chipset drivers" and how to install them.

On the Intel web site. You may also find them on the Sony web site.

Thanks Terry!

I tried running teh Intel CHipset Identifcation Utility, Version 3.20,
but it drew blanks. It said: "Failed to identify your chipset."

So I found another utility called CPU-Z and it gave me lots of info,
but it is all meaningless to me. One of the tabs labeled "Mainboard"
has this info:

Chipset: Intel 1440BX/ZX Rev. C1
Southbridge: Intel 82371 (PIIX4)
Graphic Intervace: Version AGP version 1.0

I've tried searching for those numbers, but haven't turned up anything.

I'd be grateful for any help you can provide me in finding the right
chipset and/or video driver for this little laptop.

In XP go to System Properties (Hold down the Windows key and Pause Key) or
(Right click on 'My Computer' and choose Properties from the drop down
list). Click on the Hardware Tab and then Device Manager button. Click on
the + sign next to Display Adapters. The video card type should be listed.

Thanks tc!

I'm running Win2K, but your step-by-step instructions worked just fine
anyway (except that I have no Windows key on my keyboard, I'm such a
Luddite, I still prefer my old IBM clunk-o-matic keyboard that feels
like typing on a Selectric).

Under Display adapters it says: NeoMagic Magic Media256XL+

It has a monitor symbol with a yellow circle superimposed over the
lower right portion wilth an exclamation mark in the yellow circle.

Where do we go from here?

Re: Need display driver for Sony VAIO PCG-XG29

Thanks a million tc!

That did the trick!

Armed with the display adapater name I was able to find, download and
install a video driver.

I guess I didn't need a chipset driver after all.

Thanks again!
