Fujitsu S7000 - moving freezes the laptop

I have a fujitsu laptop that I bought in 2004. I worked w/o problems so
far.
But couple weeks ago, it started freezing everytime I move the laptop
slightly. It works fine when the laptop is still, but if I pick it up
or move it little bit, it freezes the windows and I need to restart.

I sent to Fujitsu service, they quoted $600 and said the motherboard
needs to be changed, which I declined.

Has anyone encountered such a strange problem? Any possible solutions
you can suggest?

As a last resort, if I need to sell the laptop in its semi-working
condition, can you recommend a site that buys this kind of laptops?

Does your laptop have any sort of shock/vibration protection system
for your hard disk? If the sensitivity got cranked up too high, your
disk will shut down every time you move it.

Never mind; I missed the bit about you having to reboot to recover
from the freeze. That won't (or at least shouldn't) happen when the
protection system kicks in.

Thanks for the reply. I have that schock sensitivity software on my
work laptop - ThinkPad. But not on the Fujitsu. Unless, there is
something built-in, I am not aware of it.

The usual culprit for movement-related freezes is a fractured mainboard,
or something loose in cabling, etc. If you have had any problems
related to the power adapter jack not making contact, this also points
to a mainboard fracture. Check insertion of RAM chips, remove and
reinsert all drives and other insertable peripherals. See if this helps.

Is you laptop being installed sudden motion sensors?
if so you can try disable the sudden motion sensor functions.

good luck.

Re: Fujitsu S7000 - moving freezes the laptop

There is no schock detector installed, as far as I know. (you mean like
the Motion Protector Software in thinkpads, right?)

I tried removing & replacing RAMs, didn't help...

Have you tried the obvious?
Boot to the minimum system...DOS floppy.
See if it locks up.
Access the hard drive, see if it locks up.
Run a floppy based ram test like memtest 86.
See if it crashes when you move it.

Divide and conquer.

Just realized I'd probably get a bunch of crap from newsgroup lurkers if
you don't have a floppy drive...gotta be extremely careful what I say
here...
If you don't have a floppy drive, try a usb floppy
or a CD boot to dos.

If all else fails, I've been known to buy busted laptops for the fun of
fixin' 'em.

Re: Fujitsu S7000 - moving freezes the laptop

Thanks for all the ideas.

You were right, I don't have a floppy.
But I reformatted and re-installed XP - it didn't help.

Unfortunately, the DOS-boot and mem-test go way beyond my IT knowledge,
I have no idea how to do that...
