MIDI doesn't work on my Dell laptop.

Hi all,
I just have a Dell CPi laptop computer that runs
Windows 98. The sound card/audio works great, all the sounds, music
CDs, etc. work just fine, but when I try to play MIDIs on my Windows
Media Player 7.0, this message comes up:

Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or
the hardware is not responding.

Upon hitting Details... this comes up:

Error ID = 0x80040256, Remedy ID = 0x00000000

It then tells me something is wrong with my sound card etc.... but all
other file types play fine.

My computer-friend suspects a driver needs to be installed.

Also,

Start / Settings / Control Panel / Multimedia / [MIDI]
is all disabled and gray, with no devices or anything listed.

Any ideas?

I can run by more info if you need it.

Thanks!
Chloe H.

Correct. A Midi driver is required, but is usually installed along with the
sound card drivers. Try a visit to the Sound card manufacturer's web site.

Re: MIDI doesn't work on my Dell laptop.

Or possibly your sound card driver is faulty. Try the one for your laptop at
the Dell site.

Re: MIDI doesn't work on my Dell laptop.

Hi,
I tried reinstalling the audio driver. I've actually done that before,
and it does nothing.
I just did a lot more research, and I guess for some reason this driver
doesn't support MIDI. You have to get a separate device. I dug around
to find what I need and it's the:

Yamaha Soft Synthesizer S-YXG50

I guess Dell or Yamaha can't distribute it anymore, but it used to come
with the computer from the manufacturer. What's the best way to get a
hold of this software?
Thanks,
Chloe H.

Chloe, send me an email (dg1261 at mdsoa.org). I went round and round with
this awhile ago.
