| Laptop IDE cable Hi I want to change the drive in my Acer Aspire 3610 from 40Gb to 80Gb so I can install Vista (Got the DVD and key from MSDN). However looking on the web there are 40 pin and 44 pin drives. I assume that the laptop required a 44 pin drive (with the extra 4 pins being the power supply). Can someone confirm or refute this or will I have to open it up in advance and take a look? Thanks Richard Web pages: http://www.caravanningnow.co.uk/ for caravanning, http://www.rcole.org/ for my personal web site and http://www.homeindorset.co.uk because I love the email address. -- My bum has been a bum for a very long time but I don't have to listen to anything it says. - The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett |

| Re: Laptop IDE cable ALL laptop IDE (aka PATA, EIDE) drives are the same and have a 44-pin connector. However, all laptops currently being made, and most made in the past two years, don't use IDE drives, they use SATA drives, which are totally different. Barry Thanks for your reply. According to the manual, this is ATA-6 (ATA/100). I guess I'll have to open it up before I buy and count :-( Richard Web pages: http://www.caravanningnow.co.uk/ for caravanning, http://www.rcole.org/ for my personal web site and http://www.homeindorset.co.uk because I love the email address. -- My bum has been a bum for a very long time but I don't have to listen to anything it says. - The Fifth Elephant by Terry Pratchett |

That is not correct. 1.8-inch drives, used in many ultralight models, are all PATA, and they have at least 4 different types of connectors. > However, all laptops currently being made, and most made in the past two > years, don't use IDE drives, they use SATA drives, which are totally > different. Again not correct. Dell Latitude, Toshiba Portege, VAIO TX, and Fujitsu P are just some that still use PATA drives. -- JL |

| Re: Laptop IDE cable I was presuming a 2.5" drive ... which as far as I know all full size laptops still use. Agreed, I didn't state that and I should have. I have not seen an IDE drive (again, talking about 2.5" drives only) in a laptop made in about the past two years, including the Dell models (only two models) or the Toshiba models (lots, but all Satellites and Tecras) that I have worked on. I have not worked on any Sony or Fujitsu models in the past 2 years.
