LAN PC card for Toshiba 460CDT

I want to get a LAN card for my Toshiba CDT460 running W98SE. Will any
card work? In other words, are these cards generally compatible? In
particular I'm looking at a "3COM 10/100 LAN Cardbus PCMCIA NEW
3CCFE575CT-V" I saw on Amazon. It's about the cheapest I could find. I
don't want to spend much money on this old thing.

Re: LAN PC card for Toshiba 460CDT

The correct name of the computer is a "Toshiba Satellite 460CDT".

Yes, any card will work as long as it has drivers for Windows 98SE; that
computer supports "Cardbus", which would be the major potential hardware
issue. But at this point, it is difficult (although not impossible) to
find cards that still have Windows 98SE drivers (note, it's a LOT easier
to find drivers for 98SE than for Windows 98 (1st edition), however).
In a few cases, I've seen new cards that had no Windows 98SE drivers in
the box, but for which 98SE drivers were available on the manufacturer's
web site, even though the box said that only XP was supported.

E-Bay is actually a very good source of used PC-Cards. You should be
able to find what you need for $10 to $15. Just be sure that it's sold
with a no-DOA warranty to be working on arrival. Also be sure that the
drivers are available (from the manufacturer's web site), and that if
the card requires a "dongle", that it's included.

[If push comes to shove, I repair and resell used laptops, and I have
probably 25 to 50 cards here that would work for you, and that I'd sell
for $15 plus $5 shipping, with a guarantee that they will work in your
laptop].

You didn't say if you are looking for a wired or a wireless card, the
above presumes a wired card. The same conditions apply for a wireless
card but a wireless card will cost more and the availability of Windows
98SE driver will be even more questionable.

So something like this should work ok?

Netgear FA511 10/100 32-BIT CARDBUS (used) eBay Item number: 200050219840

I found drivers online for Win 95/95b, 98, ME, 2000, XP, MS NT 4.0, etc.
(but not necessarily W98SE)

Definitely Ethernet. I don't see trying to get this old thing going
wireless.

Yes, it should work. Hurry, it ends in 18 minutes.

Re: LAN PC card for Toshiba 460CDT

When you go to install this, if it doesn't work, go into bios setup and
check the "mode" for the PC-Card slots (I think it's on the second
page). Be sure it's set to "16-bit/Cardbus". The other two choices
often don't work, and "PCIC Compatible", which often doesn't work, is
usually the default.

Re: LAN PC card for Toshiba 460CDT

I went ahead and bid and won that auction, but there are plenty more of
that same card on eBay if anyone else is looking for one. Right now
there's a couple for $8.95 with free shipping.

Thanks for all your help!
