Networking a laptop with no display

I have a Dell 8100 laptop and the video card is messed up. I get a
display but cant read it.

My father has files on it that he doesnt want to loose.

Without removing the HD and setting it up on my PC, is there a way to
network the laptop?

I am hoping there is a magical boot cd or something I can make that
makes a little generic network I can jump on.

Thanks
Brian

Have you tried (if the laptop has an outlet) an external display? Usually
some combination of FN key + F5 or F6 or similar to toggle between laptop
screen and external display.

Yes I did - I think the video card on the laptop is bad.

IMHO I think you will have to remove the hd and do it that way - even if you
set up a network then you still have to set the shares up on the laptop
......
assuming that safe mode doesnt work either?

Re: Networking a laptop with no display

I was hoping there was a bootup CD that setups up a generic network and
shares the C drive.

Re: Networking a laptop with no display

First, I'd remove the hard drive and insert it into an external USB
drive case (or technician's adapter cable, which is the same thing
without the "case"), then put that onto your desktop computer. Easy and
quick, does not require opening or reconfiguring the desktop computer in
any way. And an external USB drive case for a laptop drive is only
about $10.

If you properly configure drive sharing, it will automatically be active
any time that you boot the machine. Just a normal boot could make the
entire hard drive available over a network. You will need a display to
set it up, for that I'd use an external monitor plugged into the
laptop's VGA port.

Re: Networking a laptop with no display

Should be do-able with various Linux 'live' CD's and/or variants on a
RedHat "kickstart" CD/Floppy disk that should be configurable to do
exactly that. You will need to read through docs on how to do that for
the particular distro and/or kickstart setup. I have seen it, but never
tried it.
