| Re: What is the best laptop in the 1K range Very easy; in fact, you can probably meet your specs at about $700 to $800, and perhaps as low as $599 in a 14" screen. I'd look at a Dell E1405 (14") or E1505 (15"), or a Toshiba M115 (14") or A105(15") series. All of these are made in a ton of configurations, some of which meet your specs, and some of which don't. And all are sold (even for the same configuration) at prices that cover a wide range of nearly 2:1 for the exact same computer. It really pays to be patient and to watch for sales (for Dell, look at www.techbargains.com daily). You can get what you are looking for $700 if you catch a good deal. If you find a machine with 512MB of RAM, it can be upgraded to 1GB for about $40. Also, you may find a lot of machines that have all that you need but come with an 80GB drive. This can also be upgraded, but if 80GB isn't enough, I'd go to 120GB or 160GB (100GB is readily available but is so close to 80GB that I'd bypass it in an upgrade). Try to get that from any place else at anywhere close to the price!! Tom J |

| Re: What is the best laptop in the 1K range You need to wait for and find a "coupon". For example, there was a coupon for 25% off an Inspiron laptop price [before coupon] at $1,199 or more. So you build up a moderately high end configuration to just over $1,200 (possibly this includes and extended warranty), and then you pay about $900. However, there have been such "coupons" for 30% off, and there have been coupons for "$750 off $1,500". Which drop you down to the $750 to $840 price range. And see my post from about a week ago where I bought a fairly high-end Toshiba A105 that had been $1,299 at Sam's club for $688. What you want is available in the $700 to $900 price range, but it will take some patience and some shopping to find it. [In fact, if you are in the US, I do think that Circuit City had a Toshiba A105 that met your specs at $749 as a "black Friday" special that was good all day yesterday and today. Note, even if you can't get to Circuit City, you may be able to order it online at Circuitcity.com.] But there's a good chance of an even better deal in the next few weeks. | Re: What is the best laptop in the 1K range I went to Sams Club. They had one laptop left, but the price was $805.00, not $688.00 when you bought it AND it wasn't even new, it was a return. I asked if they could honor the old price but they said no. I understand. It would have been nice, but that's retail. I'll keep scanning the ads. I'm sure something will come up soon. Bob.
