| NEC ND-6500 DVD drive cannot read DVD's Hi folks, I am having some trouble with my DVD drive on my laptop. It is an internal NEC ND-6500 DVD +- RW drive that I have used for quite sometime burning and playing dvd's. Just recently it stopped being able to read dvd's for some reason, every dvd I put in the drive it detects as a blank CD. I cannot figure out what the problem is as I haven't changed anything but the physical location of the laptop. It is the only optical drive in my laptop (HP Pavilion zv5000) but for some reason in device manager I have listed the NEC ND-6500 DVD Drive and AXV CD/DVD-ROM SCSI CDrom Device <---- I have no idea what this is. I haven't tried to burn anything in a while, I am just using it to play movies while I am at work. I am using XP Home SP2 with all the latest Windows Updates. I have already upgraded the firmware on the drive and that didn't help at all. I got the firmware update from HP's website I think, it has been a while since I have done that. The laptop is almost 2 years old, I wouldn't think that the drive would be going out already. Any help would be great! |

If it can still read CDs, the laser in the drive probably failed. As there are two lasers, one for CDs and one for DVDs. Unless you feel up to replacing the laser, time for a new drive. |

Just did some further testing and it seems to play a retail dvd just fine, and I noticed that when the retail dvd was in the drive in My Computer it reads the drive as DVD-RW, however when I put a dvd that I have burned info on in the drive it comes up in autoplay saying it is a blank CD, and the drive in My Computer reads as CD-ROM drive. The only thing I can think is that it is the media but I have used the same kind of blank DVD's for months now and only recently started getting this problem. I also tested out the burned DVD in other drives and it works fine, even in a standalone dvd player. |

Same brand name on the label does not mean same manufacturer so could be does not like the manufacturer? This problem is sounding very much like the aforementioned failed laser. |
