| Memory seems slower? I have Dell Inspiron 8100 the came with 256 mb ram. I upgraded to 512mb and the system seems slower. Whats up? The system origally had the OEM memory that I gave to a friend to upgrade his machine. I replaced it with two 256mb sticks of Hynix memory. The system recognizes it but I have not really noticed any change. In Fact, if anything it may be slower. Unfortunately I can't go back to the OEM ram to check for sure. In my other machines I always saw some improvement with increased RAM On start up System info says: Total physical Memory 512mb Available Memory 278mb Any suggestions? |

I have a friend's I8100 on my desk as I write. This computer came with 2x128MB RAM, and is loaded with XPSP2. One RAM chip was bad, failing in both RAM slots. I have 2x256MB on order from Crucial, that should be here today. I would do a few things to help out with the new RAM: run Disk Cleanup. Run, from a Command Prompt: chkdsk /r to repair any errors on the HD. Open My Computer, right click the C:\ drive and uncheck the Indexing. From Administrative Tools, Services, disable the Indexing service and set it to Disabled. The computer cannot run more slowly with 526MB compared to 256MB on XP. Q |

Hi Nicholas, You seem to have shared a lot of RAM with the video card. Also your swap file will have gotten bigger (if you have it sent to Windows managed) and if you have a slow hard disk, it will actually appear to be running slower though it should be more stable.
