Quantex N30W Battery Issues

Alright. I have had a laptop for about a year now, a Quantex branded
N30W. For most of that time, it has also had a battery. The battery is
recognized by Windows, the lights on the battery come on after
charging, but the laptop cannot run on battery power. If it is on, and
one unplugs it, it will act like a desktop computer, as in turn off.
When it is not plugged in, it will not start off of the battery. This
has been bugging me for some time, and I would appreciate some help
fixing it. Also, Quantex went kaput in 2001, so there's no way I can
call their tech support.

Re: Quantex N30W Battery Issues

I think that you are screwed. Basically, the battery is shot, the only
fix is a replacement battery, and laptop batteries are all proprietary.
Consequently, since Quantex is belly-up, you are likely just plain
"out of luck", with the following possible exceptions:

1. It's possible, but very unlikely, that some 3rd party battery maker
makes a replacement battery. Search the web.

2. If the laptop was really made for Quantex by someone else, you may
find a suitable battery from the real manufacturer (most likely Compal
or Quanta).

3. You might find someone who can "rebuild" the battery with new cells.
This is usually only safe if it's a NiMH battery, with Lithium
batteries it can be extremely dangerous (not just the rebuild itself but
subsequent use ... Lithium batteries can be unbelievably dangerous if
the slightest thing isn't right, witness the recent recalls of 10
million Sony batteries as an example, and just one example).

This is a good reason why one should NEVER buy a laptop from any firm
other than a "1st tier" vendor. The battery aside, you probably will
never be able to get the right drivers for Vista, either, although the
laptop might well be able to run Vista. And, of course, any repair that
needs parts of any kind probably means the end of the laptop.

Re: Quantex N30W Battery Issues

Ok, I realize that I should have mentioned a few things that I didn't.
First of all, the chassis is a Compal N30W, which is the same as a Dell
Inspiron 5000. And secondly, I do have a battery. It is made by Dell,
with a part number of BAT30WL. I hope this helps!

Then what is the issue?

The issue is simply this: by all accounts, the battery should work. But
it doesn't. The battery does not power the laptop. Everything about the
battery works except for its primary function. The battery is
recognized by Windows, the lights on the battery come on after
charging, but the laptop cannot run on battery power. If it is on, and
one unplugs it, it will act like a desktop computer, as in turn off.
When it is not plugged in, it will not start off of the battery. This
is the problem.

The battery is dead. Get another one.

Re: Quantex N30W Battery Issues

I have the exact same problem with my quantex n30w. I replaced the battery with the Dell bat30wl about 6 months ago. The battery charges just fine in windows and all 6 green leds light up when you push the side button on the battery. It will not power up on the battery and will not run on it. Did a new battery fix this problem?
