| advice on purchasing notebook for travel I currently use a Dell Latitude D610 and want something smaller and lighter for travel - mostly just for email and access to my office desktop. I don't care much about video or audio, no gaming - just light and easily transportable in my briefcase. I'd like to get away for under $1500 or so, but I think that's unlikely. My first thoughts are a Vaio, but would love any input. Thanks in advance. |

Sony has acquired a reputation of being a company that charges an arm and a leg for parts and service, IF you can even get service. Caveat emptor! Notan |

I wasn't going to include the following, but take it with a grain of salt: I always hated to service Sony products because if it wasn't under warrantee, it was usually bad news! :( Although that isn't to say their products are bad... as they are above average. :) -- Bill |

| Re: advice on purchasing notebook for travel Should be easy .... there are really good, powerful laptops in the $600 to $900 price range. Sony would not be my first choice. I'd look at Lenovo (Thinkpad), Toshiba and Dell first. For small size, I'd look for a 14" standard screen (4:3), rather than a widescreen, or possibly a 14" widescreen. There are some nice small laptops with 12" screens, but they are expensive ($1,200 range). If you care about getting the most value for dollar spent, Sony is not the answer...for the price of a Vaio, you can get a much better computer from HP, Acer, Gateway, etc. Sony's service and customer support are notoriously bad...Sony is an arrogant company when it comes to customer service, but this is even more so when it comes to their computers...and it seems as if they actually cover very little under their standard warranty..if you can even get them to honor their warranty... | Re: advice on purchasing notebook for travel Thanks for all the terrific input - especially in regard to Sony. I think that is a mistake I would have hated to have made from ignorance. I'm happy with mine that I paid $900 for at Sam's almost a year and a half ago. Great things is that if you buy at Sam's or costco and have a problem in the first six months, they'll exchange or give you your money back. |

The XPS M1210 is from their home computer section, the Latitude series is from their business section. Sometimes there are better deals with one vs the other. The link you provide shows an apples to oranges comparison of installed features. Configure and buy the one that creates the best value. |
