Probelem with Dell Inspiron 9300.

Hi,

Ive got a problem with my 9300... about 6 months ago my laptop when booting
had no display, I called tech support (It was still in service then) and
they cured the problem by having me unplug the video from the mainboard, and
then plugging it back in.... every 8 or 9 reboots, the machine will do the
same thing, no display, turn it off, unplug, wait, plug it back in and it
works again.

A few weeks ago my laptop developed another problem, a strip about 2" wide
from top to bottom about 2/3rds of the way across the screen is faded out...
its noticable on black, but when you use a light colored background, then
its ok... but it is faded, then a few days ago, the other side of the screen
(again 2" wide), kind of has a flickering, thing going on, if I move the
mouse over it the mouse cursor does not flicker, but just the background.

Does this sound like a inverter problem? Can anyone suggest any cures?

Thanks

plug it into a regular monitor and see what happens.
If it works ok then you graphic card is ok and then go from there.

Yup the display works fine on an external monitor, im guessing at inverter,
what does everyone else think?

I think you have far more serious problems than just an inverter or a
lamp. I'm guessing at the very least, you have cold solder connections.
At worse, some bad chips driving the LCD display. I'm afraid this isn't
looking good. I'd sell it on eBay and note the problems with it and also
say it works ok with an external monitor. Then buy another laptop.

Inverter board is a cheap and easy fix but that's usually when the
screen get too dim for you to see anything.
Your problem sounds like the lcd screen itself is defective and that
is an expensive fix.
Some of the Inspiron line of laptops are great, while others are the
entry level cheap models selling with rebates at your local store, but
I'm not sure about your particular model.
Sometimes a new screen cost about as much as buying another laptop
I'm sorry to say, depending on how much you like what you currently have.
I have replaced a couple of screens so I've been there.

Re: Probelem with Dell Inspiron 9300.

It really doesn't sound like an inverter problem, especially "strip
about 2" wide from top to bottom about 2/3rds of the way across the
screen is faded out" that is not either a lamp or inverter problem
pretty much for sure. Flickering is also unlikely to be an inverter
problem (could, however, be a lamp problem).

I've got the 9300, it had the progressive vertical line problem and then it got a 1 inch vertical white space towards the right side of the screen. I plugged it into another monitor and it worked fine. I got a new monitor with inverter for $109. and now all is well. Easy to install also.
