Preventive Maintenance

Hi all...

I just installed a new hard drive in my laptop with a fresh version of
WinXP (SP2). I also installed the basics - Office Pro, avast
anti-virus, Adobe Photoshop and Premier Elements and the other
necessities such as Adobe Acrobat reader.

Is there anything from a "preventive maintenance" standpoint I can do
now so my laptop stays as blazing fast as it is now. It seems that as I
install more software, the slower the computer gets.

I feel like I just bought a new car and want to make sure it stays as
fast and well performing as it is now.

Thanks,
TCM

I would strongly recommend making HDD image with specialized software, thus
in case of HDD disaster you would be able to easily recover your system and
programs.

Thanks - how do you recommend I do this? What software do I need? Any
free ones?

I use Acronis True Image ver. 8 - so it's my recommendation. BTW this
version is obsolete however works great with NTFS. Newest version is 10.
You may also use Norton Ghost 9, Terabyte Drive Image to name the few.
Sometimes older versions of them are on CD's attached to Chip magazine and
then they are free for home use.

Software I mentioned is generally not free.

Hope this helps.

Re: Preventive Maintenance

No free ones. The choices are Drive Image (no longer sold, but still
available), Ghost or Acronis True Image. CompUSA has a "deal" on a
bundle of Ghost and Norton Anti-Virus (NAV) this week, I think $10 for
both. Since Ghost or TrueImage are both normally $30 to $50, it's worth
getting (I'd probably not install NAV, however).

What do you use/recommend for virus protection?

I use NAV at home and find it impacts performance severely.
My company uses McAfee worldwide and it's been implicated in conflicts
with various pieces of software we need to run.

In fact there is free DrvImagerXP by Lexun Designs. It's not supported by
the author any more but still available on the Net.

Nice description of DrvImagerXP:

and DrvImagerXP itself can be downloaded from:
http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/drv...setup_2.2.html

10 USD for Ghost and NAV is fantastic offer, I would go for it.

Re: Preventive Maintenance

I use avast! (http://www.avast.com/). It is not "bulky" like Norton or
McAfee. It is easy to install, updates by itself and does network
protection, email inbound and outbound scans through Outlook, Web
protection and others.

I love it!

Re: Preventive Maintenance

I've been using Norton but am about to give it up. McAfee is no better
than Norton, in my view. What I'm probably moving towards is Kaspersky.

www.terabyteunlimited.com have a number of imaging products. You can try
them for a limited period of time. The BootitNG product allows for
taking and restoring images, as well as being a partition manager. It
can also be used as boot manager. See the web site for more information.

I am not associated with Terabyteunlimited in any way, except as a
satisfied customer.

The free version of AVG has a very large following and doesn't run like
crap like Norton and McAffee does.
