| Replacing HDD in Presario - Silver Sheet? I'm replacing the hard drive in an old(ish) Compaq Presario 2700. The old hard drive has a silver sheet stuck on the underneath (circuit board side). Do I need to transfer this to the new drive? What's it for? Thanks. :-) |

It is probably a cheap RF (radio frequency) shield used just to pass the FCC RF standards. And if your laptop works and you can still listen to your favorite radio and TV stations, I wouldn't worry about it. Although your neighbors might if they are say within 6 feet away from it. -- Bill |

| Re: Replacing HDD in Presario - Silver Sheet? No. It could be for EMI shielding, but it could also just be an insulator to prevent the circuit board from being shorted out (even though it looks silver, it's not conductive on the side that actually is in contact with the circuit board). While you may not need THAT sheet, the circuit board side of drives normally is exposed, and there may be a need for an insulating sheet, depending on the installation. So should I just transfer it and be done with it? |

| Re: Replacing HDD in Presario - Silver Sheet? Yes unless there's a good reason not to (like removing it will damage the old drive).
