Dell Inspiron 1150 Wont power on (PSU is working)

Hello all, I couldn't find this answer anywhere on these forums
(maybe i didn't have the right keywords), but anyhow I have a Dell
Inspiron 1150 Laptop which won't boot up. The Power supply is working
properly (tested it with a multimeter), but none of the LEDs are
lighting up on the computer, and it won't boot. It isn't just the
screen either.. nothing kicks on at all. I took it apart to see if
maybe the power connector came loose, but it appears to be soldered on
the board fine.. I also checked resistance on the ground at various
spots.. checked out fine.. What are common things to check? I'm not too
experienced with laptop repair. At least not as well as Desktops ;-) If
there is anything to point me in the right direction, I would GREATLY
appreciate it!!!!

Ok for starters, an unloaded power supply might check out just fine.
Although under load it just might crap out. But I don't think it is the
power supply either, but it still could be.

So nothing happens when you power up, eh? It could be the PS of course.
Does it work on battery? Or is that shot too? If so pull it out and try
again. There should be a fuse, but it can look like anything. From a
wire that looks like a jumper, etc. Rarely, but some models of computers
will do nothing if the CMOS battery is dead. At least you have some
things to check out now anyway and let us know, ok?

Measure the voltage from the power supply, but measure it inside the
laptop, past the power connector. It sounds like power isn't getting
into the laptop at all. See if you can verify this, and if it is the
case, trace out where the circuit is broken.

I am having a similar issue with my Inspiron 1150. I just replaced my ac adapter and when I power up the laptop the front power LED lights up, the fan comes on, I see the DVD light come on and I hear the HDD spin up yet there is no display. no other LEDs come on, even briefly, and no POST ever starts so no startup. I checked for a cold solder joint and all looks well. I even tried powering up with no battery and results are the same. Any thoughts?

Re: Dell Inspiron 1150 Wont power on (PSU is working)

I found the identical problem on an 1150 I'm working on for a friend. The system would boot, then shut off if moved, lifted or touched in the wrong place. Eventually, it refused to boot. I found that the machine will boot if I hold down (hard) on the case next to the touchpad; evidently there's a grounding issue. I'll keep trying to chase it down.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1150 Wont power on (PSU is working)

I, too, just experienced this today. This is my company laptop and has information on it that I need to get by tomorrow! Has anyone found the cause of the problem? I noticed like someone else here that the power supply had been screwy and it was shorting. I fixed it with duct tape and haven't had any more problems, but the computer won't fire at all now. Its exactly what Mwahaha... stated. I'm hoping that the hard drive isn't fried to I can try to save what is on it. I'm going to tear this POS apart tonight and see if I can find any internal fuses.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1150 Wont power on (PSU is working)

Just wanted to let everyone know that I took the comp apart tonight...couldn't get anything to go. I removed the hard drive and when I put it back into the comp, it fired right back up...I doubt that this was the problem, but worth looking into.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1150 Wont power on (PSU is working)

Any one resolve this problem?

The computer I am working on right now is sort of having the same problem.

It is random though. I was reformatting it, but when it rebooted to boot to the installation part of Windows it doesn't do POST now. Just a black screen with the cursor blinking in the top left part of the screen. Then if i let it sit for a while it will start working again.

Re: Dell Inspiron 1150 Wont power on (PSU is working)

t's a long way -- in terms of miles, habitat and species -- from domesticated ponies in the verdant meadows of central Pennsylvania to wild mustangs in the parched high deserts of Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico and Wyoming, but research under way in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences is bringing them closer together.
Researchers hope that contraception methods that seem to work in a small herd of ponies kept in a lush, partially wooded pasture at the Penn State Horse Farm not far from Beaver Stadium can be applied to hundreds of thousands of wild horses out West where overpopulation is straining habitats and wildlife management budgets.

"A pony is considered to be any horse that is less than 14.2 hands (58 inches) high," explains Nancy Diehl, assistant professor of equine science. "Actually, ponies are a lot closer in size to the mustangs than the 1,200-pound quarter horses we have at Penn State. It makes sense to do our research with ponies. We currently have a herd of 14 ponies -- 13 mares and a stallion."

Most contraception work with wildlife -- and that is what the wild horses of the West are considered -- has been done using vaccines, according to Diehl. Penn State Distinguished Professor Gary Killian, who has done extensive contraception research with white-tailed deer, has teamed on the pony project with Diehl, whose expertise is horse behavior.

I'm also trying to sort a dell 1150 for a friend with virtually identical symptoms to those you describe (apart from getting it to boot by pushing hard) it does sporadically boot when left for a while -as if heat might be a factor.

Did you get to the bottom of the problem? Would like to know - other forums seem to suggest motherboard breakdown as a possible cause....
Thanks

Re: Dell Inspiron 1150 Wont power on (PSU is working)

I do have to wonder about the reviewers that complain about the dell Inspiron 1150 battery. They are probably the same guys who would buy a inspiron and complian about the mileage. I will carry my extra battery as a badge of honor. Either you get it, or you don't.
