brand new laptop and water :-(

My friend just called me she accidentally pour some water over her
laptop (it was on). Nothing happened, she turned it off to let it dry.
November 1st is public holiday here so she can't contact service shop
for checking.

In your experience, what are the chances there will be no failure
caused by this accident? What can be done now?

Thanks.

Re: brand new laptop and water :-(

The chances are slim, but not zero.

If this was just water, her best shot is to let it dry out a LONG time
(two weeks would not be too long). Otherwise, she should do whatever
she can to wipe up and remove as much as possible, inclding turning the
laptop upside down and using a hair drier (don't get carried away, we
are not trying to melt anything, just speed natural evaporation), and
definitely let it dry out for DAYS (I'd say 3 days would be the absolute
minimum .... but, again, a week, or even two, would be better).

Drinks should never be around laptops (or, arguably, computers, but a
desktop keyboard is not that big a deal). And there is a reason why
Toshiba and Dell offer optional warranties with "accident" coverage for
laptops, because being dropped and having a drink spilled on it are
among the greatest cause of laptop failures, the consequences are
generally really bad, involving either LCD or motherboard replacement,
both of which can cost $300 to $600.

Re: brand new laptop and water :-(

brand new laptop and water do NOT mix

Remove the battery and the power cord. Let it air dry.

On some models the keyboard is removable - often they have tabs on the
bottom and a few clips along the top. If she sees the clips and can move
them and lift off the keyboard she might find that the moisture was all
caught by the keyboard ( there is a backing to the keys). But do not do
that until she knows the kb is dry.You don;t want to pour it from kb
onto motherboard. If she gets it off and can see that nothing leaked
thru and everything is dry, then use a soft brush to clean it up ( while
you're there) , maybe a can of compressed air to blow it all dry - put
the kb back on, engage clips again. Check all around - battery area,
memory area etc to make sure liquid didn't get in from the table - not
THRU the kb but rather from a puddle on the table.

Re: brand new laptop and water :-(

It won't work any better, but it won't be as concerned about it.
