help....new laptop

I have a dell inspiron 1300 (9 months old) used very little (about 10 hours
at most) and now stopped working, I dont think the hardrive is firing up. I
still have guarantee but any small thing I could try before sending off for
repair.

thanks

Re: help....new laptop

Many Dell systems have a onsite warranty (they come to you). But this
sounds like more than a small thing, so if it's still under warranty,
let them fix it whether you have to send it in or not.

Re: help....new laptop

Whether you call Dell or ask Usenet, what are the error messages? Make
triple sure your battery is charged.

Re: help....new laptop

There are no error messages as it doesnt boot up and there is no hardrive
`noise`. The battery is charged but also trying via mains adaptor.

Re: help....new laptop

When you call Dell, they'll walk you thru their torubleshooting prior to
"sending it in". If it's dead it should be quick - hopefully.

Re: help....new laptop

Let us know how that process goes as their support HAS been awful. I
know a lot of folks that stopped buying from them. Endless questions
from the techs that didn't understand/speak English too well.. Family
had that same experience - their desktop PC died - DEAD - like yours and
he said that he was asked about 10 times (as the 'tech' went thru the
flowchart) " is the green light in the power supply on ? " Reading
this weekend that has Dell finally smartened up, but it may be too late
for them ( Barron's)

Re: help....new laptop

Bobb
Yes I have got to say his English wasnt the best but then again I am
slightly deaf which probably didnt help. They did `walk` me through some
checks and they did ask on a few occasions about things that made me think
"your not listening" properly. I suppose though that they are working from a
checklist and must ask certain questions after each check as no doubt the
phone calls are monitored/recorded. However after about 15 minutes they have
agreed to collect it and get it back to me within 7 days.
Overall though I am happy that it is going to get sorted as its under 12
months old, not too happy that it has gone dead after only about 10 hours
use, I only use it when I go on hols etc as I have my main desk PC which is
my main workhorse. They did labour on the point about wether I was happy
with the service and with this particular phone call, which I thought a bit
strange but after what you have said maybe not!
