| OT: Digital Recorders for Dictation ? I really looked for the "correct" groups to post this in, but I didn't find what looked like a suitable group which includes the word "office." Anyhow, I hope you friendly souls will not mind chiming in here, as I know that there is a wealth of knowledge around these groups. I am a small-businessman, and I do a lot of dictation. I now use a Sony micro-cassette hand held dictating machine, and it serves me well, "most" of the time. I have now seen that there are times (mostly when I am out of town) that I would like to dicate, and then be able to email the dictated audio file to my office for typing. Thus, I have a keen interest in digital recorders. Can any of you offer any recommendations as to what features I should look for, and/or what brands, or specific model numbers that you have used ? I don't need huge capacity or huge features, but I do need a small unit that is usb ready so that I can plug the machine into my pc, load the audio files, and then email them. I assume these units use some sort of compression so that the final audio files are not too large, and can be emailed. Any thoughts/comments/ experience, and recommendations would be greatly appreciated !!! --james-- |

| Re: OT: Digital Recorders for Dictation ? My favorite recorder for such things is the Olympus DS-3300. One can easily overwrite mistakes or insert stuff into a message, when one forgot something while recording it. It records in the DSS format, 10 minutes of speech require approximately one megabyte. If you want something cheaper and don't need certain features, partial erase for instance, the DS-2300 is very similar and very good too. <*** Michael Lang ***> <jnipperxxx@nospamfdn.com> wrote: > > >I really looked for the "correct" groups to post this in, but I didn't >find what looked like a suitable group which includes the word "office." >Anyhow, I hope you friendly souls will not mind chiming in here, as I know >that there is a wealth of knowledge around these groups. > >I am a small-businessman, and I do a lot of dictation. Sony's MD recorders are probably the best small recorders, or at least were. The only new recording model left is fairly expensive, and much larger than most recording mp3 devices. I have several mp3 units, but the iAudio G3 is the only one that has these features: Using the internal microphone (it can't use an external mic.) you can set the mic. volume to levels 1 through 10. A low volume would be good for recording in noisy environments. You can set the output files can be any of these formats: MP3: 128, 112, or 96 kbps. WAV: 32, 16, 11 or 8 khz. It also has a "Voice Active" feature that pauses recording if it doesn't detect any speech. The sensitivity threshold can be set to values between 0 and 10. This can save time on playback since there wouldn't be any long periods of silence to deal with. FYI, the files that the G3 produces are about 500 kb/min for 11khz wav files and about 700 kb / minute for 96kbps mp3 files. Small enough to be emailed unless your recording go beyond 10 minutes per recording. I've found the G3's firmware to be a little flakey when it comes to these recorded voice files. Sometimes they don't show up immediately so I have to power off the unit. After powering it back on, the recordings are where they're supposed to be, and can either be played back, or after connecting to a USB port, copied to the computer using either iAudio's JetShell software or a file browser such as MS Explorer. -- [ reposted, as original was only addressed to a.m.m.h ] |
