| Buying a T60. Hi, I'm interested in purchasing IBM T60. I live in Poland and my friend is comming to NYC next week. I have 2200 USD to buy one (2000 USD + Tax). I found something that seems to be a nice deal for 1999 USD on ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/IBM-ThinkPad-T60...QQcmdZViewItem Could anyone here tell me if that's good or does is there a place where I can get it cheaper? The thing is that it HAS TO BE IN NYC as my friend will pick it up and pay cash. I don't want the WWAN as it's easier to get a PCMCIA card here and our networks work on 1800 MHZ not 1900MHZ. I definitely want a sturdy computer with a 3 year world wide warranty (I use them quite intensly and my T40 failed on me twice). I has to have 15inch screen 256mb Video Ram, a lot of Ram :) , minimum 80GB hdd, DVD burner, 2Ghz + core duo or core duo 2, long battery life and additionally something that won't give me a shoulder injury because of its weight. Also is there any program that my friend could pop in to check if there're no bad pixels on the screen? I reckon that he'll be allowed to check the machine before paying for it. Thanks in advance for your help. Kind regards, Raphael |

My T40 goes over 5 hours, my T60 only about 3. And the corresponding heat from the T60 is rather annoying. I don't know whether to blame the heat and poor battery life on the CPU or video card; if it's the video card, I'd choose some other Core duo laptop instead. And as you probably know the T60 is a fair amount thicker. I can't complain about the speed though. My 3d simulations run smoothly even at the native 1600x1200 resolution, and large programs compile in about 1/3 the time of my 1600mhz T40. The screen is brighter with better contrast too. But in most other respects, the 3 year old T40 is still better. |

The only reason why I'm getting rid of my T40 is because it's warranty is almost over and in case something will go wrong, If something goes wrong with it, IBM's service is a daylight robbery, so instead of fixing an old computer I might as well get a brand new one, faster, and one that I won't be worried about. I don't use the battery that often so it's not a problem for me. What I'm looking for is a good screen and an improvement in power. I definitely need a laptop as I keep travelling with it, but what actually really got me interested in it is the fact that it's pretty light. I reckon that your problem is that you have the 6 cell battery. The 9 cell one is suppose to give at least 4.5 hrs or battery life what's good enough for me :) . Anyways, I'm still wondering if there's a better place to buy my new laptop then in the link that I just gave providing that it is in NYC and can be picked up. :) Thanks for your help, Raphael |

Good point. I had major warranty repairs on my T40 shortly before the 3 years expired. > I don't use the battery that > often so it's not a problem for me. The T60 delivers on those counts. > I definitely need a laptop as I keep travelling > with it, but what actually really got me interested in it is the fact that > it's pretty light. Actually I have both 6 and 9 cell batteries (by the way, they're different / incompatible from the T40 battery which was a disappointment). On the 6 cell I only get around 2 hours. > Anyways, I'm still wondering if there's a better place to buy my new laptop > then in the link that I just gave providing that it is in NYC and can be > picked up. :) > Thanks for your help, > Raphael Sorry, I'm afraid I live thousands of miles from NYC. |
