| Toshiba Satellite P15-S470 & Upgrading XP M.C. to SP2 Hello, Since MS stopped supporting Windows XP SP1, I will need to upgrade Toshiba Satellite P15-S470 notebook's XP Media Center SP1 to SP2 soon to keep it updated, patched, etc. It already has all the updates from SP1 as of last Tuesday, 10/10/2006, except one update (Media Center Update which I never got it to install and not important since the TV tuner stuff is not used). Is it safe to upgrade the OS to SP2? I am a bit scared/worried about problems in upgrading like incompatible drivers like wireless Internet, Palm software, NAV 2004 (all LUs), etc. I checked Toshiba's Web site and other places, and I don't seem to see anything interesting. Also, I ran Toshiba's software updater and it finds nothing and never really see it show anything since 9/2004. Basically, I am looking for any issues that I should know about when I upgrade the OS in a few weeks. Thank you in advance. :) -- "Don't be no Ant-Man. Also those computers that came with SP2 preinstalled does work well too. I haven't seen any driver issues though. Just my 2˘. -- Bill |

| Re: Toshiba Satellite P15-S470 & Upgrading XP M.C. to SP2 If I could, I would have moved my Win98 onto my new XPS@ endowed Acre. I run old MS Office and regularly get "errors" that shut down MS Word, Excel, etc. And, when I report the "error" the response from MS is "Sorry, this applications no longer supported." and an offer to spend $600 getting the latest version! If I can get Ubuntu to address my printer and work with my ACER Wireless, I'll be dropping XP, Office and so forth. | Re: Toshiba Satellite P15-S470 & Upgrading XP M.C. to SP2 Pick up a copy of Office 2003 Students & Teachers edition, $100 to $120 when it's on sale. Legal installation on 3 machines ($35 per system). Office 2003 is the best version of Office ever; XP SP2 is the best OS MS has ever offered. resrfglc wrote: > If I could, I would have moved my Win98 onto my new XPS@ endowed Acre. | Re: Toshiba Satellite P15-S470 & Upgrading XP M.C. to SP2 The original Microcode update that Intel released to computer makers (for incorporation into their BIOS') for Prescott CPUs had a bug in it that prevented proper operation with the XP SP2 upgrade; the computer would lock up or never restart following installation of the SP2 upgrade. This code found it's way into a LOT of motherboards and laptops, and can cause real grief. The fix is to upgrade the BIOS to the latest available version BEFORE doing an upgrade to SP2. There is also a fix if you get caught with this problem, there is one file that is the culprit, and if you replace the SP2 version of that file with an earlier version, the "dead" system will then resume booting and working. Unfortunately, I don't remember which file it was off the top of my head. But the right fix is to update the bios. | Re: Toshiba Satellite P15-S470 & Upgrading XP M.C. to SP2 Interesting. I wonder if it already has the latest BIOS. It was bought at CompUSA on 3/20/2004. I will have to check later when I see the notebook again. Did SP1 have this problem? IIRC, the notebook came with SP1 patched on XP. | Re: Toshiba Satellite P15-S470 & Upgrading XP M.C. to SP2 No, the purchase date of your laptop was prior to the release of SP2, and prior to the microcode fix (which didn't come out until July or so of 2004). You definitely should udate the BIOS before upgrading to SP2 if the CPU is a "prescott" family model (actually, I'd upgrade it anyway if there is a newer BIOS available). The problem did not exist in SP1. ANTant@zimage.com wrote: > Interesting. I wonder if it already has the latest BIOS. It was bought at CompUSA on > 3/20/2004. | Re: Toshiba Satellite P15-S470 & Upgrading XP M.C. to SP2 Interesting. Check this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/885626 out: "Method 2 If you have not installed Windows XP SP2, you can install the Critical Update for Windows XP (KB885626), and then install Windows XP SP2." I assume XP SP1 offered this since it was a critical one. I do keep XP SP1 updated with everything except the Media Center update. | Re: Toshiba Satellite P15-S470 & Upgrading XP M.C. to SP2 The "problem" did not occur with SP1. There is one specific file in SP2 that triggers the problem. Replacing that file with an older one [temporarily] is a work around. But the best work around is to update the bios before upgrading to SP2, in which case there is no problem.
