| Laptop repair: invertor or lcd problem? Hello everyone, One of our VP's turned on his laptop (an Inspiron 9300 that went out of warrantee a couple of months ago), and found that the entire right half of the screen was blank, while the left half worked fine. I attached a regular VGA CRT and this works fine. Any idea how to tell whether I'm dealing with a bad LCD display or a bad inverter? Once he leaves for the day I'm going to open it up and just make sure all the connections are snug, hopefully it'll be as simple as refitting a cable, otherwise to eBay I go.. Thanks, Ken |

| Re: Laptop repair: invertor or lcd problem? It's a bad LCD display. The inverter powers the backlight. If it (or the lamp(s)) fail, the effect will be to the entire screen, not just to one half of the screen. pithen******.com wrote: > Hello everyone, > > One of our VP's turned on his laptop (an Inspiron 9300 that went out of > warrantee a couple of months ago), and found that the entire right half > of the screen was blank, while the left half worked fine. Why would the inverter be bad? It lights the florescent lamp. Is there more than one lamp in this laptop? -- Bill |

| Re: Laptop repair: invertor or lcd problem? I guess I'll be pricing out a new LCD display then. Bill: I had spoken with somebody on the phone that said the problem could be with the motherboard, the LCD, or the inverter. The mb was scratched from the list right off the bat as the display works fine on the external monitor. Being unsure as to the function of the inverter, I didn't know whether or not that could be causing the problem. Anyway, thank you both for clearing that up, Ken |

The LCD (expensive), lamp (cheap), and inverter (sort of cheap) are often replaced as one single unit (very expensive). Nice eh? > Bill: I had spoken with somebody on the phone that said the problem > could be with the motherboard, the LCD, or the inverter. | Re: Laptop repair: invertor or lcd problem? The lamp is physically inside the LCD panel and they are often replaced together (even when the lamp is the problem). I've never seen anyone routinely replace an inverter, however, or knowingly replace an LCD panel when just the inverter was bad. There is no reason to do so.
