e1505 and wireless card problem

Hi: When I close the lid on my Dell E1505 laptop I occasionally lose
my wireless network connection. Under Power Options in the control
panel I have the system set to Always On with nothing being shutdown
ever. Under the wireless device settings I have the setting "Power
Save Mode" disabled.

I really want to work with this laptop lid closed most of the time
(have external monitor and keyboard) but can't for the life of me
figure out why the wireless is dropping out when I close the lid. With
lid up it works flawlessly.

Running XP Pro SP2. The wireless card is a Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN
mini-card.

thanks,
russ

Do you have any anything going to sleep/standby in the Power options
like the HD or the CPU? Next time to try is the Device Manager and find
the WiFi card and select properties and make sure it isn't using power
saving.

I did. Makes no difference (even rebooted). What other settings could
affect the wi-fi card making it power itself off?

Re: e1505 and wireless card problem

Update - problem solved! I had a problem with my Dell Inspiron
E1505/6400 laptop as follows: I had all power options set to "do
nothing" in all cases (close lid etc.) on my Insipiron E1505 (which I
have hooked to an external monitor). No power management enabled at
all. When I closed the lid everything worked fine EXCEPT my wireless
connection would sputter and then freeze. Some "lid closed" message was
telling something somewhere to go to sleep.

Then I went to
http://www.kn.com.au/networks/2005/0...mment-24899494
and posted my problem. The following response describes how to set a
registry key to solve the problem:

>Not sure if this helps anyone with their specific "DO NOTHING" problem, but theres a >registry key you can add that at least fixed my particular lid closing not DOING NOTHING >when it should problem. View "WORKAROUND" portion of the link:

Bad news. Problem has resurfaced. It was a fix for 2-3 hours and then
back to this same symptom - close lid, wireless dies.

fyi,
russ

Did the registry change too, which fixed it before? Anyway you might
want to reconsider closing the lid while the laptop is on anyway. As I
can close mine and it really does nothing as advertised. But I noticed
that the laptop does indeed get a lot warmer when I run it this way.
Here is what my setup looks like. Maybe it might give you some ideas.

Re: e1505 and wireless card problem

Bill:

Yeah, I may just give up and run with my laptop lid open like your
setup. At least until Vista comes along - hopefully the Power Options
work as advertised in Vista. :-)

russ
