Identifying "real" toshiba laptops

Just curious as to how you can differentiate a real toshiba laptop from
a compal laptop?

Ive searched old posts, someone said the real toshibas have a 15v power
adapter,the compals have 19v.

I just bought a Satellite A105-S4254, was wondering which kind it was?
It does have a 15v adapter which is a good sign.

AFIK, Toshiba has followed through with their plans announced in 2004
that they were outsourcing all notebook manufacturing except for some
notebooks for the Japanese market.

Re: Identifying "real" toshiba laptops

The A105's that I've seen use 19 volts.

Anyway, I think that Toshiba is now using more outside vendors than
Compal, and may be using outside vendors exclusively. Plus, they have
gone to higher voltages because the power requirements of the newer
processors got too high to supply at 15 volts (too much current
required). Bottom line, all of the old guidelines are out the window.

At one point that was true but no longer. There are at least 3
companies that are currently building Toshiba notebooks. They are
Compal, Inventec and Quanta. I know for sure there is a fourth
company but I've never been able to pin down just who it is. As for
Toshiba themselves, as far as I know, they only design and build a
few special models for sale only in Japan. Everything else is
outsourced.

As for your A105, as I mentioned in another post, I know that all
three of the companies mentioned above each build some of the A105
models. Based on my available sources the best guess is that your
particular A105 is built by Inventec. Based on my past experience
working on Toshibas the Inventec built models have tended to be the
most reliable of the bunch.

As for the AC adapters I've seen both 15v and 19v ones from all three
of the companies mentioned above. I remember the M45 series (at least
2 different manufacturers) having some models with 19v adapters and
some with 15v adapters. I believe the same to be true for the A105
series.
