| Laptops with glossy screens - why? I just recently got to use an Acer "Aspire" model of some sort which had a very glossy, highly reflective screen. I found reflections from lights and such in the room to be distracting. Then I see an ad for the Apple "MacBook" which claims as a feature "a 13-inch glossy widescreen display" . What's the point of this? My old IBM R51 has a relatively non-reflective screen and is more easily readable under similar lighting conditions. -- Bert Hyman | St. Paul, MN | bert@iphouse.com |

| Re: Laptops with glossy screens - why? This is a point of debate right now. The laptop makers seem to think that the glossy screens are "better". Well, there are clearly situations in which they are worse, and also situations in which different users might judge them to be subjective either better or worse. You pays your money and takes your choice, except that sometimes you don't get a choice. For me a trackpoint is its like an appendix, .....not necessary, but a glossy screen is more useful than a drab one |

It's just a screen and I still see everything just fine. I'm nearsighted and I wear glasses. I don't know if that makes a difference? -- Bill |

I have a similar question. I don't care if a screen is glossy or Glossy screens are horrible to use if there is spot ambient light (say, sunshine). I can't understand why people buy them, which is why I asked the question. |

Any anti-reflective coating or matting finish on a screen reduces both, because the screen on laptops are designed to use less wattage. Laptops that are designed to be multimedia machines use glossy screens to give the best picture quality, and it is assumed that they will be used in areas where the ambient light can be controlled. |

ASS UME? At least, the clitoris mentionned in another post is removable, and that's what I did on my R51. Try removing the gloss from your glossy screen ... Problably a cheap trick to make users think they have a video card instead of the bad video Intel integrates! -- John Doue |

Your spot on mate...That is what I noticed....Movies looks really good if your glossy screen has higher resolution such 1920 x 1200 like mine..... Movies looks so sharp ....and enjoyable to watch... |

Toshiba used to use trackpoint controllers. And people who had complained got an generic answer back. Something about they did a study and found that a trackpoint was the best one to use on a laptop and they are not going to change. Funny thing is they don't use them anymore, but rather use touchpads nowadays. lol I still have two laptops with a trackpoint. I don't mind them too much. In fact, sometimes I prefer them. I actually liked trackballs too (all they are is an upside down mouse). Maybe I am one of the few, eh? -- Bill |
