My lapt top (Sony vaio) of about 5 years old has a slightly damaged DVD/CD
drive. I would like to upgrade to a DVD writer and have seen them for about
£40 with a sony label on them. Can I easily replace the drive and ought it
to work. If so does any one know how to do it

There is no way to answer this question, in general. In principle, you
can do what you want. But there are a lot of mechanical issues
involving the mounting and the bezel plastics that may make it difficult
or impossible. It depends too much on the laptop and the specific drive
in question to give a general answer.
