In summary: If you need a laptop now, buy a laptop now.

If you do not need it now, wait as long as you can before buying it,
because every day you wait, your buying power increases.

The operating system is a negligible consideration; if you're going to
be running Windows, there will most likely /never/ be any software
worth worrying about that requires Vista. (Past experience is proof of
this: there is almost no software extant that requires XP and will not
run on Windows 2000).

Of course, I have constrained myself to mere practicalities, and hence,
neglected to factor in penis envy.

Re: Should I wait for Vista ?

Well, try to wait until at least October 27th. Word is that new
computers of any type purchased after that date that come with XP will
be eligible for a FREE or reduced price copy of Vista next year (free or
price to depend on the version of XP on the new computer and the version
of Vista desired).
