While recently searching around the web, I found an interesting blog post by Tim O'Reilly. Basically, he thinks there needs to be a "Code of Conduct" for Bloggers, and states his personal opinions on what a "Code of Conduct" would entail. Among his list were:
Rating Sites/Blogs (i.e. G, PG, PG-13)
When in an argument, take the conversation offline
Don't say anything online that you wouldn't say in person
Now, I don't know about you, but personally this blog scared me. Has the internet really become so bad that we need a "Code of Conduct" to regulate how we behave? Do we need a rating system for our sites? In my opinion, a "Code of Conduct" is excessive. Yes, there are people out there who do stupid things like spamming, threatening other people, and using inappropriate language. Yes, what these people do may annoy you. However, as long you are not personally doing these things, what is the problem. All you need to do is ignore the people who are writing things which offend you, and don't get involved. It's just like when you were a kid, and your little sister or brother would come over to you and try to get in your way. You know how they would make faces at you and do a ton of other things just to get your attention? Now, if you let them annoy you and get in your way, did they stop? Probably not, because you just gave them exactly what they wanted. Attention. However, if you simply ignored them, what happened? I bet they eventually got bored and moved on to something or someone else. Put it this way, you are the kid in my story and the people out there on the internet who post inappropriate things are your little brothers and sisters. Simply ignore them, and they will go away. OK, maybe that is an exaggeration. They might not all go away, but I bet that if you ignore them (just like your little brother and sister) they will eventually get bored and move on to bugging someone else.
