| OneNote opens links to OneNote files incorrectly. I'm telling you, the list of things that started going wrong with OneNote after I registered the full retail version of ON 2007 is really starting to get irritating. Now, most of the time now when I click on a link to a page or section in OneNote I get a dialog asking, "Do you want to open the 'FolderName' notebook in OneNote (recommended) or just open the 'SectionName' section from within it?" Whichever one I choose, OneNote then opens that folder or section separately even though it is already open in another part of OneNote. By "separately" I mean as a separate button in the Navigation Bar instead of just jumping to the already opened section in the already opened notebook. I have double checked the links and they give the full path and a section ID code. If I edit the link to remove the path to the file then the link correctly jumps to the specified section. This tells me that the section ID is still good which means OneNote isn't simply resorting to the pathname because the section ID is corrupted. However, editing the link is a bad workaround because it means I would have to spend an additional few seconds editing each and every link as I create it. I create a lot of links. I upgraded to OneNote 2007 specifically for the linking features. It would use up about 10% of my time when I am doing heavy research to edit all the links I create. I already have to do so many different workarounds that almost half of my time spent in OneNote seems to be wasted on workarounds. At least when I am doing heavy research or organizing my thoughts. When you are just trying to organize your thoughts it is not good to be constantly interrupted with doing workarounds. By the time I finish doing all the workarounds I sometimes forget what the heck I was doing them for. |

| Re: OneNote opens links to OneNote files incorrectly. I'm going to try to learn from your experience: I'm using the trial. I'm going to upgrade with a purchased box (buying a key is not an option). Is there anything you think I could do to prevent this from happening, at the time I upgrade? The only thing I haven't tried is to completely uninstall the trial version and install the retail version from scratch. If you haven't done extensive modifications to the settings then this shouldn't be a problem. However, I have and it is just such a pain to record and reset all the settings that I haven't felt like doing it yet. |

No. I never had the trial installed. I installed OneNote RTM and I have Grant's problem. It's a OneNote problem, not a problem when upgrading to OneNote. |

One thing that is worth doublechecking when a "bad link" comes up. (1) shut down OneNote, restart, see if the problem is still there. (2) if the Notebook is synched, see if the LINK fails on a peer copy. (3) shut down the entire PC and see if the bad link persists. |
