I know all of these questions have been asked separately but I need to
clarify something before I spend my money.

I have the trial version of OneNote 2007 installed on my Tablet PC. I
just built up a new desktop. I qualify for the academic version of the
software. I have made considerable modifications to the setup (toolbars
and such) and do not want to have to repeat those.


A) I cannot purchase the academic version using the { Help / Activate
Product... ; [Convert...] } button. I have checked.

B) Since I can't get the academic version via the [Convert] button, if I
purchase the boxed academic version on-line, will I be able to use that
boxed academic version's license key to activate my preexisting trial
version of OneNote 2007? I called Microsoft Sales and she wasn't sure.
She knew it would work for retail versions but she didn't know whether it
would work with academic license keys or not.

C) Will that academic license key still allow me to install the program
on both my Table PC and desktop?


I would prefer to receive answers only from people who know specifically
about the academic version licensing. While the program may be the same,
often the licensing is different. Thank you.

Hi Grant,

You won't be able to use the academic version license key to activate the
trial version.
You will need to uninstall the trial version first and then install the
academic version.
What customization have you made? Most of toolbar cusomization gets saved in
user profile which remains after uninstallation.

Regarding the question C), I have asked to the licensing team and will be
able to answer you on Monday.

I did find out from the Academic Superstore and Microsoft Sales that the
academic version can be installed on a desktop and laptop just like the
regular license.

I completely rearrange the toolbar buttons to get as much of the things I
need on three toolbars as will fit. I have written a couple of really
long postings about all the stuff I do and the hows and whys. I do know
that it does go away when I uninstall and reinstall because I have had to
redo it several times this fall. I keep forgetting to save the settings
by copying the right files out of the application data folder before
uninstalling. I know the location of the file which stores the toolbars
is mentioned in an older post. I will have to dig it out and back up my
settings before I go yanking out the trial this time.

Microsoft Sales said they thought I "should be able to" use the academic
version key to activate the trial but they weren't positive. I can always
tell when some tech support person is guessing. I am going to go ahead
and buy the academic version from Academic Superstore so I will find out
for absolutely positive soon enough. I'm guessing you are probably right
but I have to at least try. What can it hurt?

That is so funny, because I remember the post too, but, I didn't go
looking for it. I reinstall my OS about once every 4 months (the
half-life of the registry is about 2 months). It drives me nuts to have
to recustomize. However, I have gotten an image of the OS, so, it
shouldn't matter now for me. I would like to see how to do this,
though, because I am constantly upgrading and repairing installations
and I would like to help my users better...

Which would you like to see? How to rearrange the toolbars like an OCD
madman or save that rearrangement so you don't have to be an OCD madman
like me every 4 months?

I have found that copying the toolbars.dat file out of OneNote's
Application Data folder works with the toolbars. However, the
preferences.dat doesn't seem to help at all for the other settings.

I have often found that a few hours poking around in the registry, in the
"Application Data" folders, and in the "Local Settings/Application Data
folders" can be a good investment if it saves you reconfiguring an
application a few hundred times. I can usually find a few files and
registry settings that can simply be copied over rather than running
through a long list of configurations with all the associated
possibilities for human error. Hunting and gathering configuration
settings can be a good hobby to get into if you want to make your life as
a support technician or network manager a little easier.

According to the licensing team, it depends on the channel (of the academic
version).
You may want to check with your dealer to be sure.

It worked fine for me. I got mine through AcademicSuperstore.com

Yes.


P.S. I do have to say that packaging was a bit obnoxious. I don't have
room to store their fancy advertising on my shelf so I just cut off the
important parts and taped them to the back of a paper sleeve. The plastic
will cut with a good heavy-duty pair of shears or a utility knife.
