| Sync with an removable (USB) drive? If I want to carry a notebook from work to home and back via a USB drive, is there a way I can use the Sync capability? I don't want the notebook only stored on the USB drive but I want it on a local, networked drive as the primary location. Is this best done with Briefcase in XP? |

Make the notebook on the usb drive, but set up the machine at work to keep a backup on the networked drive. Optionally also set up the home machine to keep a backup on a storage card or similar if so so equipped. This would give you quite a few copies and is possible by default with ON 2007. |

| Re: Sync with an removable (USB) drive? This isn't quite what I was thinking. I'd like the working copy to be on my local storage (fast network storage) so I don't pay the penalty of slow access to the USB drive. If there was a background sync going on with the USB drive when installed that would be great. Also, I may not always have the drive available or inserted. Just keep the notebook open in OneNote. |

| Re: Sync with an removable (USB) drive? You are asking for a troublesome configuration... Some background first: OneNote stores a notebook in one location, e.g. your USB stick or your network drive. Every OneNote client (meaning a copy of OneNote on one computer) will open the notebook from that location, but not directly. Instead, every OneNote client creates a local cached copy of the notebook. Any changes you make in OneNote are only written to the cache, which in turns is synchronized with the actual notebook in certain intervals. The actual notebook does not have to be available when you use OneNote. I have gone weeks at a time just working off the cache and syncing to the notebook again afterwards. The question for you is why you want the network storage? Is the network storage just for backup purposes or are other users using the notebook via the network as well? | Re: Sync with an removable (USB) drive? Well, the network storage is primary storage at work. It is backed up while the local disk is not. It is also policy that work documents for projects get stored in specific locations. I have share the notebook but as far as I know, no one else in my work group is using ON. If my work here would come to an unexpected, abrupt end, it may be possible that someone else will need to access the data. In addition, the network location has Windows Permissions/ACLs set such that the availability can be controlled. But, see another posting <http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?&guid=&sloc=en-us&dg=microsoft.public.onenote&p=1&tid=68132f3d-7116-4d82-8aef-d7788dba2510> for concerns regarding that. | Re: Sync with an removable (USB) drive? Then I suggest you store the notebook on the USB drive, and tell ON to store its backups on the network location. The notebook on the network would be for backup only and not for collaboration with others. If that need ever arose, you'd have to store the notebook in the network storage and you wouldn't be able to use the USB stick. The link is not showing up, so I am not sure what you are referring to.
