| When is Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 1? Hi I have many issues running Microsoft Office 2007 on Windows Vista Ultimate; and most of them are SharePoint 2007 related. Try the following to get an idea of what I am talking about. - Create a OneNote shared notebook, and store it on a SharePoint library, restart the machine, and try to see if it still synchronizes. - Try to open the OneNote book from another machine using the File Open dialog, and see if you can get it to open from there :-) - Map a network drive under a letter like Z, and try to create a Shared OneNote book there, it will not use the drive letter, it will be replaced by the path, but I don't want that, if I tell the machine it is a drive latter, it is a drive latter. - Try to map a SharePoint library to a drive latter under vista, I did it, but it is even tough for a professional user. Just try OneNote and SharePoint 2007 under Vista together, and see if it works as is should. It looks like it was rushed to the market before it was a 100% completed, so, when is 2007 Service Pack 1? |

Sorry, but that's correct behavior. That's the way it should work, because drive letters are very volatile. I think most programs written after Windows 95 or so came out should behave like this. If you want to force it to a drive letter, use subst to assign a drive letter and it shouldn't be resolved into a path. > - Try to map a SharePoint library to a drive latter under vista, I did it, > but it is even tough for a professional user. | Re: When is Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 1? About the network path and the drive latter, if I want to use a drive latter instead of a network path, then there was a very good reason for me to do that! If I ask OneNote to use a drive latter, I am expecting OneNote to use the drive latter, the last thing that I want someone at Microsoft taking a decision for me and denying me that. It is disappointing that Microsoft treats all its customers as clueless users (I don't want to say stupid) , if I want a system to do something is a specific way, let me do that, don't just go and take a decision instead of me. I am using Vista RTM and Office RTM, and SharePoint 2007, and in some cases these 3 are not working well together, especially when it about sharing or mapping data of a SharePoint library to Vista, authentication issues (does not save your password for example), etc. "Patrick Schmid [MVP]" <pdschmid@nospam.mvps.org> wrote in message news:eyp4KzjPHHA.3668@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... >> - Create a OneNote shared notebook, and store it on a SharePoint > library, >> restart the machine, and try to see if it still synchronizes. >> >> - Try to open the OneNote book from another machine using the File Open >> dialog, and see if you can get it to open from there :-) > I'll test that once I have a SharePoint site available > >> - Map a network drive under a letter like Z, and try to create a Shared >> OneNote book there, it will not use the drive letter, it will be replaced >> by >> the path, but I don't want that, if I tell the machine it is a drive >> latter, >> it is a drive latter. > Sorry, but that's correct behavior. | Re: When is Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 1? > About the network path and the drive latter, if I want to use a drive latter > instead of a network path, then there was a very good reason for me to do > that! For most users, resolving the drive letter to a network path and then using the network path instead provides a much more robust and reliable handling of network shares. This is a typical behavior for a lot of Windows programs, and OneNote is no exception. As I said before, if you want it to use a drive letter, then play around with subst. | Re: When is Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 1? I don't think you are getting what I was trying to say, and an MVP making fun of a customer is not a plus for Microsoft you know. Anyway, I don't like that a product is treating me like a clueless user, at least I should be informed if OneNote decided to change the drive latter to a path, at least a pop message that will give me the chance to say yes or no to the change. If the Vista team did his job as it should and Vista supported the direct shares to SharePoint, and if the OneNote team did his job correctly and was able to consume those shares without errors, I would have not be here complaining in the first place. I found a trick that makes OneNote to use a drive latter instead of a path, and I solved my problem, and that means that the OneNote team who implemented the conversion of a drive latter to a path did not do his job as well either (they missed a spot). | Re: When is Microsoft Office 2007 Service Pack 1? > I don't think you are getting what I was trying to say, and an MVP making > fun of a customer is not a plus for Microsoft you know. You are not my customer as an MVP is not a Microsoft employee. I am a user like you. > Anyway, I don't like that a product is treating me like a clueless user, at > least I should be informed if OneNote decided to change the drive latter to > a path, at least a pop message that will give me the chance to say yes or no > to the change. Most users would have absolutely no idea what to do with such a message. So of course the program does what the vast majority of the users would expect it to do (everyone wants their files accessible no matter whether the drive letter to the network share is still there or not. Drive letters are highly volatile, network shares themselves are not). Drive letters themselves are a relic of DOS days and a modern network infrastructure could easily do without mapping any network shares to drives. > I found a trick that makes OneNote to use a drive latter instead of a path, > and I solved my problem, and that means that the OneNote team who > implemented the conversion of a drive latter to a path did not do his job as > well either (they missed a spot). I'd presume that the resolution of the drive letter to a path is handled by a Windows API call and not by something implemented by the ON team.
