| Outlining with ink in OneNote tips? I am a new user of a Tablet PC and OneNote, and am enjoying them immensely. I'm reviewing all the tips, tutorials, examples, and blogs I can find to determine the best ways to use them from the experiences of other users or developers. One thing I've encountered that I could use some help on is outlining with ink. Capturing thoughts in ink is very natural and moving items easy. However combining text lines together and getting the outline structure I want seems elusive. I can get them to merge, but often not at the right level (i.e. indentation) once merged. Turning on the "show ink groups" is helpful as is using stationary to keep my wandering script in check. However moving & merging lines and having them come out at the right outline level - or to change levels once merged is difficult. I don't have the problem when I use the keyboard and mouse. In powerpoint I seem to have many levels of outlining that can be set as desired on any line, whereas in One Note though it shows 5 levels, I can't seem to promote as easily. Does anyone have any tips? | RE: Outlining with ink in OneNote tips? This was a limitation in OneNote 2003. Whole inking experience has been improved in OneNote2007. I'd recommend to try OneNote2007 :-) Thanks, Doehee "mkcook" wrote: > > I am a new user of a Tablet PC and OneNote, and am enjoying them > immensely. Still it might be that you'd find the features of outlining on a TabletPC have not really reched the state needed :-( :-( But have a look yourself. There's a free trial in order to fill the gap until the product will apppear in the shops. | Re: Outlining with ink in OneNote tips? I've searched the web to figure out whether user error is making ON '07 unusable for me...and I fear the result is "it's a feature not a bug." I use ON on a TabletPC and take lots of notes in outline format. As you know ON '03 tried hard to support this. It wasn't perfect, but if you adjusted to it, you could create new lines and indent a bit and you'd end up with an outline. Writing on a grid helped give you a guide for indenting. You even had a little customizable button that continued a paragraph (I put it in two places). It was "good enough" and I waited ON '07 for improvements. ON '07 is awesome overall and note-taking is great with a keyboard. But now ink-based note-taking with an outline seems, well, just about useless for serious notes. No auto bullets, no auto indents (with ability to collapse). And the MS site says "This behavior is by design in OneNote 2007. To apply bullet or number formatting to handwriting, you must first select the handwriting and then apply the formatting." Presumably, you must also do a real indent manually after taken the note also. I would LOVE your answer to be "You idiot, your options are just set up wrong" or "learn to outline differently and it will work." I'm willing to conform, but as it is now, ON had become my most important daily (hourly) application and I have to explore something new because ink-based outline note-taking seems to have been destroyed. Can you set me straight? Thanks! Can you > set me straight? Thanks! > > No. You are correct. I have completely given up on creating outlines or having any true organization whatsoever when handwriting. I tend to use OneNote in only one of the two major modes on any given page. I take class notes on one page and rewrite that as study notes in text form on a separate page. Yes, it is possible to mix the two but it is more trouble than it is worth. The only features I use with handwriting is that I can now lasso handwriting or drawings and move them around (I leave lots of room around things to make this easier) and I can search for words in my handwriting. Other than that, I just slap down what I need for my quick notes and use typing for everything else. |

Can you > set me straight? Thanks! ..02 only: I simply don't get it. Ink in 2007 works better than ever, if you treat it as ink and not some automated pseudo ink. That is, I use ink to make the bullets, I use a space to indicate an indention, and basically treat it as grid paper ad usual. This works for me, gives a lot of flexibility as seen fit, the lasso allows for finer text manipulation as required(and it does happen), and the handwriting in 2007 is a lot less likely to jump around on its own (particularly if you always use the lasso to select handwriting, never the text selection tool to do so). So, I don't see how handwriting is any worse for wear - it is more like paper... for me that is a good thing. ..02, fwiw |

| Re: Outlining with ink in OneNote tips? I don't get it...who needs an outline when you have a pen? Outlining was revamped because Word Processors didn't allow you to write wherever you wanted. If you can ink, and do an outline with the ink, what is the need for auto outlining? I don't really understand the usage. Having stated that, this world is very diverse, and I think a great program is one that let's people make up how they want the program to run, not just how the developers envisioned it. So, I think you should have the opportunity to have outlined inks, if you so wanted it. erik |

| Re: Outlining with ink in OneNote tips? Erik, Yep, in a paper-based world, you're right. My paper notes aren't nearly the strict outline of my electronic notes. The difference is how much of the notes I can see at one time and reorganization: Since the screen is only 12" but a meeting can be hours long, it's helpful to take notes on a topic and then immediately collapse it to a main head. Then in one glance you see the big picture, but everything fits the screen. You can do this with lots of subpages, but it's not effective for a quick overview. This is FAR more critical taking such notes on a smaller-screen PDA (I use Textmaker on a PPC for notes just because it has this capability where Pocket Word does not). But it's also useful on a 12" screen. You could even say this is a place where electronic note taking beats paper. The second thing is reorganization (something you can't and don't even think of doing on paper). When topics are flying, you can just take notes and sub-bullets of minor context and the when there's a lull, quickly organize the points into something easier to read later. This is far easier if the subpoints to a topic ride along when the topic is moved around.
