Sync problem in OneNote 2007

Several - but not all - of my notebooks are displaying the following message
when I try to access them:
"Waiting to sync this section.
Another OneNote program created it but has not yet uploaded the content."

The files (*.one) all appear to be present in their original location but
each of the notebooks that doesn't work has a file size of just 4Kb.

I recently had to reinstall the program but don't see how this would have
caused the problem. Also it seems strange that not all notebooks are
affected.

Re: Sync problem in OneNote 2007

Were those notebooks created on a different machine? Sounds to me like
maybe that machine hasn't correctly synced the content from its offline
cache to the common storage location yet.

Re: Sync problem in OneNote 2007

They were created on the same machine but Windows had been reinstalled and
the OneNote reinstalled since they were created. Would this be equivalent to
being a different machine?
Seems strange that all my notebooks were created prior to the Windows
reinstall but now some work and some don't.

Since posting the first question, I checked the backup files and here there
are no files for the notebooks that aren't working. So the original files
seem to have been reduced to 4Kb and there are no backup files for these
notebooks, is there any hope of recovering these notebooks? Is the data in
the 'offline cache'?

I guess that in the process of the windows reinstall, the offline cache was
wiped out anyways.

Yes, as far as OneNote is concerned.

Did you notice if any of the notebooks that aren't working now were
showing warning/error icons before you reinstalled windows?

The backups are stored next to the cache. If reinstalling Windows
deleted the cache, it most likely deleted the backups as well.

If you could recover the original cache, you can put save it over the
new cache, which should allow access to the data again. If you do this
though, make sure to make a copy of both the original and the new cache,
so you can restore it, or try again, if it doesn't work.

Sync error in OneNote 2007 new installation

I just installed OneNote 2007 and when I try to access my unfiled Notes, I get a flashing "Waiting to sync this section.
Another OneNote program created it but has not yet uploaded the content."

I have not tried to create anything in this notebook nor could I if I tried. I'm not sure what it is trying to sync to, but I have set up no syncing to anything. Anyone know what's going on? Is there a way to tell it to stop trying to sync?

Thanks,

Craig

My impression is: there are some details missing ...

1. If you really had a new = first installation of Onenote then the
"Unfiled Notes" would be empty
2. "Unfiled Notes" are stored in one special section outside any notebook
3. "Unfiled Notes" are never synched

Did you RE-install Onenote overwriting an existing installation ?
If yes:

Where are the old notebooks located ? At the local file sytem or at a
network share ?
Were the old notebooks synched before the reinstallation ?

Why did you reinstall ON ?
Did you even changed the OS (XP -> 7) ?

Re: Sync problem in OneNote 2007

There was no previous installation, but I did install it as a trial and then convert it. I had created no notes, however. But it apparently thinks there are notes for some reason, so is there some way I can tell it to cancel the sync and forget about importing whatever it's trying to get?

Now if it's really a new and theoretically empty installation I would
(during Onenote is closed):

1. Delete the so called Onenote Cache. To find it you have to search for
the file OneNoteOfflineCache.onecache
2. Delete the Unfiled Notes.one file within your OneNote Notebooks folder
3. Now start Onenote again and open the notebooks you want
4. Report your success ? ;-)

Added: The storage location if the Cache is to be seen under
