ON printer can't be shared?

I've got several machines on my network and don't need ON installed on each
one but would like to be able to print to my main ON machine from the others.
I've shared the "Print to OneNote" printer and connected from another
machine but when I print I get a message on the ON machine that the "file
cannot be found" and I end up with a blank page in ON.
Has anyone successfully shared and used the ON print device from another
machine?

The "Send to OneNote printer only works when ON is installed on the
machine. And it cannot be installed separately.

Re: ON printer can't be shared?

How to install the printer wasn't my question and the answer is actually
technically inaccurate.

The issue isn't how to install a ON printer to a machine that doesn't have
ON but rather why doesn't printing to a shared ON print target work?

It is currently possible to install ON on machine A, share the ON printer
from machine A and set up a printer machine B which links to the ON printer
on machine A. That part works as well as it does with any normal printer.

Unfortunately when one prints something on machine B to the shared printer,
machine A will pop up a dialog that reads "Onenote cannot find the file
specified" and leave you with a freshly opened ON window with a brand new,
but blank, page.

Re: ON printer can't be shared?

When you connect to a normal shared printer a driver is installed on the
remote workstation to use when you print. The OneNote print driver makes no
such provision - even though it looks like you're connecting to it from B,
no OneNote print driver is ever actually installed on B so it can't do the
printing.

I would guess there is also an issue where the print target is not a device
but rather an application and since Machine B doesn't have that application
it doesn't really know what to do with the print output.

Bottom line: The OneNote print driver wasn't designed to be shared that way
and while I agree it would be a useful feature, it's not very surprising
that it doesn't work.

How can you explain my ability to set the printer up on machine B and print
to it (as I would with any shared printer) if the driver doesn't support that?

Windows goes through the motions and I'm left with a printer on machine B
that can be selected and printed to.

It's not actually machine B that appears to have a problem. Printing on
that machine appears to work fine.

You may be on to something though with regard to the non-hardware nature of
that printer.

I did a test with CutePDF which is another software "printer" and it has
similar problems when a print job comes from another machine on the network.

Setting up the printer is not the same as using it. I can show up on
Jennifer Anniston's doorstep with a breath mint and a corsage but that
doesn't mean I have a date. :) Windows doesn't know if you have a viable
printer to print to until it tries to print. Have it send a test document
to that printer you just set up on B and you'll find the same result.

It seems that you are mixing *physically* existing printers and
*virtual* printers.
The latter have to be installed on the computer.
With OneNote it's not different from any other virtual printers - be
it FinePrint or Adobe Acrobat.
You won't be able to produce a PDF the way you are thinking it might
be done with OneNote. [1]

In so far what I said in my last posting was anything but "technically
inaccurate" as you pleased to characterize it ..

Rainald

[1] What you report on your efforts to produce a PDF with "CutePDF"
just underlines the situation I had been talking about in my last
posting
