Why doesn't my ON synch

So, I created a new ON Notebook on my desktop PC (running Vista Ultimate). I said to share it with multiple computers. It created the notebook and shared the folder. I went to my laptop, also running Vista Ultimate (on an SBS domain controller, logged in as the same user), and opened ON, did a File,Open and browsed to my desktop and opened my new notebook. Everything came up fine. I added some stuff to the laptop and it never showed up on the desktop. I tried to synch and got an error that "some other process has the file locked". I closed ON on the desktop and tried again - no go.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,
Lon

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

Any ideas here? Are people not sharing ON databases between desktop and PC?

Thanks,
Lon

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

Patrick:

Here are the steps I did to create the ON Notebook:

I created a new ON Notebook on my desktop PC by clicking on Share, Create
Shared Notebook, and gave it a name.

I chose "I will use it on multiple computers".

It created the notebook and shared the folder.

I went to my laptop, also running Vista Ultimate (on an SBS domain
controller, logged in as the same user), opened ON, did a File,Open and
browsed to my Desktop PC and opened my newly created Notebook. Everything
came up fine.

I added some stuff to the laptop PC and it never showed up on the desktop
PC. I tried to synch and got an error that "some other process has the
file locked". I closed ON on the desktop PC and tried again - no go.

Checking the folders using Windows Explorer, the OneNote Notebooks folder
under \Users\Lon\Documents is shared as is the Lon's OneNote folder which is
the name of the Notebook. I'm logged on to both PC's as the same user and I
changed Everyone's permissions to Co-Owner.

Hope that explains better,
Thanks again for your support,
Lon

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

If you go File, Sync, Notebook Sync Status on the laptop, hit sync all
now, what does it report as error for your notebook?

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

Patrick:

This is the first time I've tried to sync since being out of town and making
changes on the laptop. When executing File, Sync, Notebook Sync Status on
the laptop, it shows both of the shared Notebooks from the desktop
accurately and it just keeps saying Waiting for Update. I put the radio
button on "Sync automatically whenever there are changes".

Thanks again,
Lon

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

What do you mean with being out of town? You need to be on the same
network as your desktop or sync won't work.

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

Patrick:

I went out of town, made changes to the shared Notebook, and then returned
and reconnected to the LAN and no sync is happening. Before I left, I made
changes to the laptop's Notebook and the additions didn't show up on the
desktop.

What should I be expecting here? The "brochure says" I can make changes on
the laptop and they're "instantly" synched to the desktop. Mine aren't
being synched at all -- that's the problem!

Am I being unclear on what's going on?

Thanks for your support!

Lon

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

Lon,

It should be syncing...
Can you disable the firewalls on your computers temporarily and then
force a sync and see what the sync status dialog says then?

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

Patrick:

I disabled the OneCare firewalls on both the desktop and laptop. The laptop
tries to sync and there are no errors, but the Progress shows Waiting for
Update for each of the two Notebooks I originally created on the desktop PC.

Another factoid: There is another Notebook I created on our SBS server that
both the desktop PC and laptop connect to. I entered a new page on the
desktop PC and the laptop PC showed it almost immediately. So, that says
that each PC can connect to the SBS server's Notebook across the LAN and
that OneNote is functioning properly -- right? I used the exact same
procedure to create that Notebook as I did the ones on my desktop PC and it
syncs fine and these two don't...

Could this be related to a Vista to Vista sync problem? Again, I'm logged
on to both desktop and laptop as the same domain user.

What does the Waiting for Update message mean?

Thanks again,
Lon

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

Would it be possible for you to store all your notebooks on the server?
I'd say that you are having some network issue and storing it on the
server is a way around it.
To figure out the Vista issue: If your find your way to the Vista
Network and Sharing Center on both computers, then File Sharing and
Network Discovery should both be on. Make sure that Password Protected
Sharing is the same on both computers as well. I suggest to try it with
password protected sharing on first.
Also, the network type should be private or work and not public.

Keep the firewalls off for this test.

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

Thanks Patrick!

File Sharing and Network Discovery are both On on both PC's. There is no
option in my Network and Sharing Center on either PC for Password Protected
Sharing.

I noticed something in another post you made above where you said "Store all
your notebooks on that computer in a shared folder (which is not under My
Documents)."

These two Notebooks on my desktop PC are stored here
C:\Users\lon\Documents\OneNote Notebooks

Could this be the problem?

Thanks again,
Lon

Re: Why doesn't my ON synch

The files are physically located on your desktop? Are you keeping the
Documents folder offline on your portable via Offline Files? If yes,
then that is the problem.
