Please can you tell me where on the toolbar is the promote button?

I don't have the 2000 version handy, but you should find Promote/Demote
(also known as Decrease Indent/Increase Indent) on the Formatting toolbar
(the one with typeface and size).

Also, when you are in the Outline view, you should have toolbar along the
left side with left and right pointing arrows that are specifically Promote
and Demote buttons.
