| Starting Office application delayed every time by Windows configur Every time I open Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, a message pops up that says "Preparing to install..." followed by "Please wait while Windows configures Microsoft Office Ultimate 2007". A progress bar moves back and forth three times, and then the Office application opens. Sometimes UAC is triggered right before the application opens. This is really annoying, and really slows down my day. And causes my wife to bug me and complain about upgrading to Windows 7 (this extra configuring NEVER happened back in good ol' Windows XP SP3). My setup: Windows 7 32-bit Custom (fresh) install running on Intel Core 2 Duo with 2 GB RAM, plenty of HDD space free. The computer is not part of a domain, and the user is an Administrator (and this happens to Standard users as well). Office version is 12.0.6425.1000, SP2 has been installed. Here is what I have already tried: A. Ran Office Diagnostics. It did not detect anything wrong. B. Uninstalled Office. Performed all steps in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928218 to ensure all traces of Office have been removed. Re-install Office with antivirus and antimalware protection turned off (and network adapter disabled). C. Modified Registry to include HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\W ord\Options NoReReg DWORD set to 1, according to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928091. I don't have multiple versions of Office installed, but I thought this might help because of possible residual stuff in the Registry due to the Microsoft Easy File Transfer I performed after installing Windows 7. The files were transferred from an XP installation. Well, it did not help. D. Created my own shortcuts to Office programs. These shortcuts do not cause the Windows configuration message, and they launch the Office programs immediately. However, Windows does not use these shortcuts when an Office file is double-clicked or a jump-list item is used. In those two latter cases, the Windows configuration message still appears. Not a solution. E. Looked for warnings and errors in the Windows Event Viewer. Here is what I found: For every time the Windows configuration message appeared, there were two application warnings: Log Name: Application Source: MsiInstaller Date: 11/3/2009 10:53:05 AM Event ID: 1001 Task Category: None Level: Warning Keywords: Classic User: keeper7\superuser Computer: keeper7 Description: Detection of product '{91120000-002E-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}', feature 'WORDFiles' failed during request for component '{0638C49D-BB8B-4CD1-B191-051E8F325736}' Event Xml: <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> <System> <Provider Name="MsiInstaller" /> <EventID Qualifiers="0">1001</EventID> <Level>3</Level> <Task>0</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2009-11-03T18:53:05.000000000Z" /> <EventRecordID>5972</EventRecordID> <Channel>Application</Channel> <Computer>keeper7</Computer> <Security UserID="S-1-5-21-3463547621-1197069869-1361609768-1002" /> </System> <EventData> <Data>{91120000-002E-0000-0000-0000000FF1CE}</Data> <Data>WORDFiles</Data> <Data>{0638C49D-BB8B-4CD1-B191-051E8F325736}</Data> <Data>(NULL)</Data> <Data>(NULL)</Data> <Data>(NULL)</Data> <Data> </Data> </EventData> </Event> This Event ID 1001 warning is slightly different for each Office application. The changes to my registry in this KB article caused new errors in Office and other Windows applications, so I had to undo those changes via System Restore. I'm really desperate! My wife is breathing down my back! MVP's, please help! With many thanks in advance, Posco |

Significantly, the errors I'm seeing in the Event Log do not indicate a problem with registry key permissions. That is, it appears that the problem described in the SubInACL page -- setup errors -- is different from what I am encountering. Can anyone else help? please? |
